Six-Run Inning Leads GreyWolves to 6-1 Victory

Gresham GreyWolves News Release

GRESHAM, Ore. - The runs didn't come often on Tuesday, but that didn't matter at the end of the night for the Gresham GreyWolves.

Thanks to a six-run outburst in the second inning, Gresham (11-5, 22-21 overall) had more than enough run support as it cruised to a 6-1 victory over the visiting Kitsap BlueJackets. The victory pushed the GreyWolves back into a tie for first place in the South Division's second half standings.

"It feels really good," said head coach Justin Barchus after the win. "This is a big series for us because the team we are competing with for first place just played Kitsap in a series, so we need to match that result or hopefully do better. It was good to get the bats going a little bit, getting on top and staying on top thanks to a good pitching performance."

Gresham got on top thanks to that crooked number in the home half of the second, sending 12 men to the plate in the process. Ryan Smith (Southern Illinois) scored the first run of the game via a wild pitch, while Drew Curtis (Southern Illinois), Dylan Doherty (Cal Poly), Konnor Zickefoose (Chapman), and Mark Cardinalli (UC Davis) would all record RBIs later in the inning.

The damage would ultimately total six runs, effectively blowing open the game open against an opponent that entered the night 19 games under .500.

Curtis provided the first RBI of the contest, a one-out single that easily scored Jeffrey Mitchell, Jr. from third base. For the GreyWolves' first baseman, tonight's performance was just another in a recent string of solid performances at the plate.

"I made a little change with my swing," Curtis said when asked about the turnaround. "I had been playing with some things to try and get out of this funk I've been in. But now I've found something that I like and it has really translated out there on the the field."

With Kitsap (5-14, 13-33) struggling at the plate and starting pitcher Donavon Ramirez (Cal State East Bay) dealing on the mound, the six-run cushion was more than enough for Gresham.

"I was just getting ahead of hitters," said Ramirez. "I just implemented a new cutter that was working for me, so it is nice to show them a lot of pitches. They didn't really know how to adjust."

Ramirez exited the game after the sixth inning, having allowed just five hits on zero runs. A pair of relievers then followed the right-hander out to the hill, each of them running into little trouble as well.

The BlueJackets did avoid the shutout by plating one run in the eighth, but that was all the visitors from Washington would get. The final score remained 6-1, getting Barchus' team back in the win column after dropping their series finale in Walla Walla on Monday.

Ramirez (3-3) earned the win for the GreyWolves, marking his first victory in exactly a month. Kitsap starter and Eastern Arizona product Nick Caudillo (1-2) was credited with the loss after giving up six runs in under two innings of work.

Gresham will now attempt to clinch a series victory and break the tie for first place with another win against the BlueJackets tomorrow. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. back at Oslund Field.
