Sioux City Musketeers News Release

MADISON, WI - The Musketeers played the Madison Capitols in what was supposed to be the first game of 4 game road swing on Wednesday, February 21st but things took a strange turn on Wednesday. The game would actually not be decided until four days later on Monday, February 26th, but Sioux City managed a 5-4 overtime victory despite the interruption.

The 1st period was a back and forth frame with both teams able to find the back of the net. Madison took advantage of their home ice, and got on the board early in this one. Anthony Callin put Madison up 1-0 just 3:44 into the game, after crashing the net and burying a rebound for the Capitols. Sioux City would respond just a few minutes later, on a goal by the Musketeers' hottest player, Martin Pospisil. , who has been performing well with multi-point games recently. The newest Musketeer, Nate Clurman, fired a shot from the point, which was tipped on its way to the net by Matyas Svoboda. The puck hit Madison goaltender, Joey Lamoreaux, and landed in front of the net. There, Martin Pospisil fought through traffic to bury the shot and tie the game up at 1. Just over 4 minutes later, Madison would retake the lead on a goal by Brendan Wolkom. The teams would head into the locker room with Madison leading 2-1, but the strange part about this game is that there was still 34 seconds to be played in the period. The reason for the early end to the period was due to a burst pipe, directly below the Musketeer goal crease. After the net came off its moorings, a rink worker attempted to drill further into the ice, but instead hit a pipe, which immediately sent yellow liquid spewing all over the ice. After almost two hours of unsuccessful attempts to repair the leak and move the game to another rink in the building, the game was finally postponed. It would eventually be rescheduled for Monday, February 26tn at 6:05pm.

(PAUSE FOR 4 DAYS)

The game would resume right where it left off, with 34 seconds left in the 1st period and a faceoff in the Musketeer defensive zone. Neither team would score, sending the game to the 2nd period with Madison leading 2-1

It was a slow start for the Musketeers in the 2nd period, and the Capitols took advantage. Colin Felix gave Madison a 2 goal lead, just 5 minutes into the frame, on a shot which slipped through Jurusik's pads to give the Caps a 3-1 advantage. Sioux City seemed to gain their footing as the period progressed, and managed to get one back, with the first goal coming off the red hot stick of Dylan Mills. Mills made an excellent play, poking the puck past a pinching Capitols defender, and set himself up on a breakaway. Mills waited until he was in tight on the goaltender, before calmly shooting the puck past Joey Lamoreaux to bring Sioux City within one. The goal would give Mills his fourth in just 3 games.

The Musketeers continued to dominate play, and scored less than 30 seconds later. Bauer Neudecker made an excellent effort in the offensive zone, fighting off a few Capitols defenders, before spinning and feeding a pass to Matyas Svoboda, who scored to tie the game up at 3. The Musketeers play remained strong throughout the period, but they couldn't break the tie leaving it 3-3 after two periods.

Madison struck quickly in the 3rd period, scoring just 30 seconds in, to take a 4-3 lead. After dominating the play all game long, Sioux City was confident in their ability to comeback. Sampo Ranta tied the game at 4 with a nifty backhand shot that beat Lamoreaux, just under the pads, for his 16th goal of the year. Sioux City wasn't able to find the net again, despite outshooting the Capitols 21 to 14 in the period, meaning this one would head to OT.

It took almost all of overtime for this one to be decided, and luckily this one fell in the Musketeers' favor. With under a minute to play, Bauer Neduecker fired a shot low off the pads of Lamoreaux. The rebound bounced right to Cole Koepke who slammed it home. After a game that started on the 21st and ended on the 26th, the Musketeers would finally leave Madison with a 5-4 overtime victory.

With the win, the Musketeers remain in sole position of 6th place, two points ahead of the Lincoln Stars. The Musketeers head to Waterloo for the final game of a long four game road trip tomorrow at 7:05. As always you can catch the game on HockeyTV, 620 KMNS, or Buffalo Wild Wings.
