Sioux City Musketeers News Release

OMAHA, NE - The Musketeers were back in Omaha on Sunday afternoon to close out the I-80 Cup against the Lincoln Stars. Both teams came into today's game with a 1-0 record on the weekend, setting things up for an excellent Sunday afternoon tilt.

The Stars got the scoring started midway through the 1st period when Justin Lee fired a shot high over the glove of Musketeer Goaltender Jake Sibell to give the Stars a 1-0 lead on the powerplay 9:12 into the game. Bobby Brink would answer right back for the Musketeers with a wide open shot from the slot that tied the game at one 10:08 into the period. That would be it for the scoring in the period, but the big story again was the penalties for both teams. The Musketeers ended the period with five penalties to Lincoln's three.

The 2nd period saw an explosion on offense for both teams. Marcus Kallionkieli got the scoring started just 3:03 into the period when he buried a no look backhand pass from Martin Pospisil to cap off a gorgeous passing play to put the Musketeers up 2-1 on the powerplay. Kevin Lombardi would add to the Sioux City lead just five minutes later when he tipped home a centering pass from Parker Ford, giving Sioux City a 3-1 lead. The Stars seemed to get stronger as the period went along and managed to get back in the game. Josiah Slavin scored at the 13:47 on powerplay to bring the Stars within one. Caleb Rule would tie things up for Lincoln just over three minutes later, scoring the equalizer at the 16:58 mark also on the powerplay. The penalties continued in the second period with both teams making four trips to the box in the frame.

Things tightened in the 3rd period with only three total penalties and no goals until the final three minutes of the game. Parker Ford fired rocket over the shoulder of Jacob Mucitellli on a 2 on 1 break to give the Musketeers a 4-3 lead. Bobby Brink was called for interference just a minute later, and Lincoln would score on the ensuing powerplay with just 44 seconds to go.

Neither team could find the back of the net in OT sending this one to a shootout where the Stars would barely get one past Sibell to leave Omaha with a win.

Sibell stopped 20 of 24 shots for the Musketeers, but all four of the Stars goals came on the powerplay. Jacob Mucitelli stopped 17 of 21 for the Stars.

The Musketeers will be back in action on Tuesday night in Sioux Center where they will take on the Sioux Falls Stampede in the third preseason game of the year. Head to the All Seasons Center Facebook page or the Musketeer Facebook page for all the details. The Musketeers will open the regular season in Pittsburg on Friday, September 28th against the Green Bay Gamblers as part of the 2018 Fall Classic.
