Lansing Lugnuts News Release
South Bend, Ind. - Six runs in the first two innings lifted the South Bend SilverHawks past the Lansing Lugnuts 6-3 Wednesday night at Coveleski Stadium. The loss keeps Lansing's magic number at two games to clinch a playoff berth.
Lansing led the game 1-0 after one-half inning, but the Hawks plated three runs in the bottom of the first to take control of the contest.
With two men on, Daniel Perales doubled off of the wall in right-center, which scored Joey Side to tie the game at 1-1. Brad Miller's sacrifice fly then plated Matt Oxendine to put the SilverHawks up 2-1. After Steve Mena grounded out, Richard Mercado delivered a single to right-center that brought home Perales to cap the inning at 3-1.
The SilverHawks were then able to put three more runs on the board in the next frame. After a Yunesky Sanchez double started the inning, Side then smacked a single that scored Sanchez to make it a 4-1 game. The Hawks were then benefitted with a double and a walk that loaded the bases. Miller was then hit by a pitch and Mena lifted a sacrifice fly to push the lead to 6-1.
Lansing added single runs in the fifth and ninth, but the Lugnuts only had five runners in scoring position during the entire game.
Jordan Norberto (6-6) got the win for the Hawks by throwing six innings and allowing two runs on three hits.
Ray Gonzalez (7-7) suffered the loss for the Lugnuts after allowing six runs over four frames. Only four of the runs were earned.
Lansing (67-60, 32-26) and South Bend (63-63, 29-27) will conclude the series on Thursday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
