Silver Stars Lose in Preseason Finale

San Antonio Stars News Release

It was a tale of two preseasons. The Silver Stars and Fever both ended their exhibition schedule at the Austin Convention Center Tuesday night.

Indiana's hot shooting in the second and third quarters helped lead the Fever to a 67-60 victory and kept the squad at a perfect 3-0 in May. The Silver Stars on the other hand dropped to 0-2 in the preseason, but the team did not give up after being down 21.

"I felt we really got some good things out of the second," Silver Stars head coach Dan Hughes said. "I felt kind of like that group matured a little bit, there is a lot of youth in that group."

The Fever was led by the trio of Tamika Catchings, Katie Douglas and Briann January, who scored a combined 38 points. Catchings was the catalyst for the Fever in the first half, hitting on five-of-seven shot attempts and pulling down three of her four rebounds.

"She was still on the court while we were rotating and that gave some of our new players the experience of what it was like to guard a superstar," Hughes said of Catchings. "She is a hard guard no matter what we do, but it was a great education for some of our young players to see what it was really like."

For San Antonio, Becky Hammon's 12 points was the best for the Stars, followed by Sophia Young's 10. Young went three-of-four from the field and pulled down five rebounds in the effort.

Regardless of the outcome Hughes remained focused on the fact that the preseason was a learning and building process to become prepared for Saturday's season opener at Phoenix.

"Even how we played our minutes today, we are going to practice hard tomorrow," he said. "This was like a step in getting ready for Saturday."

San Antonio will face the Phoenix Mercury at 9 p.m. on Saturday, June 6. The game will be broadcast live on My35 KMYS.
