Shuckers Sweep Doubleheader over BayBears Saturday

MOBILE, ALA. - Tyrone Taylor and Brett Phillips collected four hits apiece, and Biloxi Shuckers' pitching shut down the Mobile BayBears on Saturday night at Hank Aaron Stadium, as the Shuckers swept a doubleheader, 2-0 and 4-2. The clubs were finally able to get on the field after being forced to sit out the last two nights due to wet grounds in Mobile. Adrian Houser took the mound in game one for Biloxi and limited baserunners for Mobile, allowing only three in his five innings of work, all via walks and all coming with two outs in the inning. The righty issued his first free pass to Mitch Haniger after getting Ildemar Vargas and Jamie Westbrook to line out to second to start the first inning. After setting down the next six batters, Houser walked Vargas in the third, but induced a groundout off the bat of Westbrook. The third base-on-balls Houser handed out went to Gabriel Guerrero in the fourth, followed by a groundout to second by Michael Perez. The 23-year-old needed 86 pitches - 47 strikes - to work through five innings on Saturday night, adding three strikeouts to his ledger.

The Shuckers stranded nine men on base through the first six innings, and were 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position, before finally cracking through the scoreboard with a two-spot in the seventh.

Nathan Orf (1x2, R, 2 BB) singled with one out against reliever Adam Miller (0-1) and advanced to second on a wild pitch to Phillips (2x3, RBI, R, 3B, BB), who deposited a triple to center to plate Orf for the 1-0 lead. Jacob Nottingham (1x4, RBI, 2B) followed with a double to right, plating Phillips for the two-run edge.

Taylor tacked on three more hits, giving the 22-year-old three multi-hit performances in his last five games - two three-hit performances.

Daniel Tillman (2-0) came on in relief of Houser and allowed a single to center off the bat of Vargas to break up the no-hit bid, but struck out the side in the sixth. After setting down the first two batters in the seventh, the righty gave up a double to Tom Belza before retiring Stewart Ijames on strikes for his fifth punchout in two innings.

Biloxi (7-2) took advantage of early scoring chances in the back-end of the doubleheader, striking early in the first to grab a 1-0 lead.

Taylor (1x3, 2 R, 2B, BB) started the game with a double down the left-field line and advanced 90 ft. on Phillips' (2x4) single to center. With Orf (0x2, R, 2 BB) at the plate, Johnny Omahen (0-1) uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Taylor to come home for the one-run lead.

Orf's day at the plate in the doubleheader extended his on-base streak to nine games to the year.

Biloxi broke the game open in the third, plating three runs to pull ahead by four.

Wei-Chung Wang greeted new pitcher Nick Sarianides with an infield single and moved to second on a walk to Taylor. A strikeout by Phillips and a walk to Orf loaded the bases for Nick Ramirez (0x4), who struck out swinging. Victor Roache (0x2, RBI, BB) followed with a free pass to force in Wang and give the Shuckers a two-run advantage.

Javier Betancourt (0x2, BB) rolled a grounder to short, but an errant throw by Ildemaro Vargas got away from Jamie Westbrook at second, allowing both Taylor and Orf to score.

Wang (1-0) shut down Mobile (4-5) the entire night, giving up just one hit over five innings of work. The lefty set down 13-consecutive batters after a two-out walk to Haniger and a single by Kevin Cron in the first. Dan Rahlfing started the sixth inning with a walk to snap the lefty's streak.

The 23-year-old lasted 5.1 innings in game two, and allowed two runs on two hits, two walks and four strikeouts.

Tristan Archer relieved the Shuckers' starter with runners at first and second in the sixth, and got Haniger to bounce into an RBI groundout before Cron singled home Vargas to cut the lead to two. A deep fly to left off the bat of Gabriel Guerrero was chased down at the wall by Victor Roache to get Biloxi out of the inning.

Jaye Chapman came out of the bullpen to close things down in the seventh, and struck out the side to record his third save in three chances. Chapman has been perfect so far in 2016, retiring all 12 hitters that he has faced.

Biloxi will head back home to MGM Park and welcome in the Pensacola Blue Wahoos for the first time in 2016. RHP Jorge Ortega (0-0, 1.50) will be the hurler for the Shuckers, while the Blue Wahoos will send out RHP Daniel Wright (1-0, 2.08). First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 p.m., with coverage starting at 12:50 p.m. on the Biloxi Shuckers' Radio Network's flagship station, WGCM 1240-AM, 100.9-FM, 1580-AM, and the TuneIn Radio app. The contest can also be seen on milb.tv.

Sunday is McDonald's Family Fun Day with pre-game autographs from select Shuckers players before the game and post-game catch on the field. It's also Breast Cancer Awareness Day to benefit Favre 4 Hope and Brett Favre will throw out the ceremonial first pitch. Fans are encouraged to wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness on Sunday.
