Biloxi Shuckers News Release

BILOXI, MS. - The Biloxi Shuckers' bats had no answer to the top pitching team in the league coming into Sunday's action, as the home town team fell 5-0 in game one of the five-game series with the Pensacola Blue Wahoos at MGM Park. The Shuckers were shutout for the first time this season and lost for the second time at home. A crowd of 3,555 for Breast Cancer Awareness Day and McDonald's Family Fun Day saw South Mississippi native and NFL legend Brett Favre throw out the ceremonial first pitch.

Pensacola (9-2) did not take long to put the first run on the board, as leadoff man Beau Amaral lifted his second homerun of the season over the wall in right to start the game. The long ball was the first run allowed by Biloxi in the first inning this season

Biloxi (7-3) struggled to find baserunners on the afternoon against Pensacola starter Daniel Wright, as the offense had just two men reach with a walk and a reach-on-error, before picking up their first hit with Nick Shaw's (1x2) one-out single in the fifth.

Jorge Ortega (0-1) worked efficiently over his 5.2 innings of work, allowing the one run on six hits and three strikeouts. The 22-year-old has yet to walk a batter in 11.2 innings this season, while striking out eight.

Steve Peterson was the first man summoned for relief and struck out Donald Lutz with a runner on first and two outs in the sixth. The lefty set down the side in order in the seventh, picking up his second strikeout of the game against Ray Chang to end the inning.

Drew Gagnon continued his hot start out of the 'pen for Biloxi in 2016, working a perfect eighth inning. The righty has not allowed a run in three appearances, spanning six innings. Hobbs Johnson worked the ninth and allowed four runs - three earned - on three hits, two walks and a strikeout.

Tyrone Taylor's hitting streak came to an end with an 0-for-4 performance. Phil Ervin led the Wahoos offensively by going 4-for-4 with a run scored and stolen base.

The two clubs are back at it again on Monday night at MGM Park. LHP Josh Hader (0-0, 1.00) searches for his first win of the year during his third start for Biloxi. Southpaw Amir Garrett (0-1, 1.50) will counter for Pensacola. First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 p.m., with coverage starting at 6:20 p.m. on the Biloxi Shuckers' Radio Network's flagship station, WGCM 1240-AM, 100.9-FM, 1580-AM and the TuneIn Radio app. The contest can also be seen on milb.tv.

The Shuckers' homestand continues through Thursday against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos. Wednesday is Education Day, with a special 10:40 am start time and Thursday is the first "Double Play Thursday" featuring $2 hot dogs and regular soft drinks and $2 off on select draft beers and reserved level tickets.

Tickets for individual regular season games are currently on-sale and may be purchased by visiting the MGM Park box office or any Ticketmaster outlet. Season Tickets, Shmini Plans, Group Tickets, Party Deck Tickets and Mercedes-Benz Mini Suite Tickets are available by calling the Shuckers at 228-233-3465.
