Shorebirds Fall in Series Opener, 4-2

Salisbury, Md. - The Delmarva Shorebirds were held to six hits as the Lakewood BlueClaws took game one of the series, 4-2, at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Monday night. The Shorebirds are 7-15 against the BlueClaws this season.

The Shorebirds were first to act in the second inning. Michael Ohlman drew a leadoff walk. Jacob Julius followed with a single to put runners at second and third. Then, Garabez Rosa singled to score Ohlman and give the Shorebirds a 1-0 lead. Rosa has seven RBIs in his last five games.

Lakewood responded in the third. Bill Rice reached on a leadoff walk. In the process of stealing second, Olhman's throw hit the sliding Rice and ricocheted into left center field, which allowed Rich to move to third. Carlos Alonso singled home Rice to tie the game at 1-1. After a walk to Jim Murphy, Zach Collier stung a double to the right field wall to give the BlueClaws a 2-1 lead.

In the fifth inning, Lakewood added two more runs. Alonso hit a one double. Two batters later, Collier hit a single up the middle to give the 'Claws a 3-1 lead. Anthony Hewitt followed with a hit-and-run single through the right side to push Collier to third. Then, on a double steal, Collier came into score.

The Shorebirds scored their second run in the eighth inning. Brenden Webb hit a leadoff double down the left field line. Webb moved to third on a passed ball charged to Cameron Rupp. Jeremy Nowak followed with a sacrifice fly RBI to right-center field to cut the deficit to 4-2.

Ryan Duke got the first two outs in the ninth before Jay Johnson came on and induced a chopper to the mound off the bat of John Ruettiger to end the game.

Lakewood starter Lisalberto Bonilla earned the win over six solid innings while Shorebirds starter Jake Cowan was pinned with the loss over five innings.

D.J. Ferguson entered in the sixth inning and held the 'Claws scoreless over the next three innings. He allowed just three hits. Cameron Roth hurled a scoreless ninth inning.

The Shorebirds and BlueClaws play game two of the series on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. LHP Matt Bywater is the scheduled starter for Delmarva.
