June 16, 2016 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Wilmington Sharks News Release

The Wilmington Sharks (8-6) spent another long night at the ballpark, but again, they'll be headed home happy. Brett Smith's fielder's choice allowed the Sharks to walk off 2-1 over the Morehead City Marlins (8-6).

A strikeout began the bottom of the 12th. An error allowed Hayes Nelson (Longwood) to reach first. Nelson came around to third on a hit and run play by Matt Meeder (Mercer). With runners at the corners, Brett Smith (Bucknell) came to the plate with one out. He grounded one to second, which retired Meeder, but Smith hustled down the line and beat out the throw to win the game.

The only other runs in the game came early in the game. The Sharks got on the board when Smith scored on a wild pitch in the third inning. The Marlins answered in the fourth on a fielder's choice that scored Christian Campbell (Rutgers).

Each team had great opportunities to score in the 11th inning. Morehead City had a runner on third with no outs, but couldn't score after a infield fly and a 6-2-4 double play ended their rally. Wilmington loaded the bases with no outs, but a strikeout and a 3-2-2 double play ended the inning.

The win went to Cody Scroggins (1-0). He pitched threw two scoreless innings, allowing one hit, and struck out the side in the 12th inning. Tad Ratliff (0-1) took the loss, pitching two and one thirds innings, allowing one run on three hits, walking one and striking out one.

The Sharks on the road on Friday in Edenton. They'll be back home on Saturday to host the Holly Springs Salamanders. These games will start at 7:05pm.
