Seventh Straight Win Completes Sweep

August 19, 2013 - South Atlantic League (SAL1) - Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release

GREENSBORO, N.C. (August 19, 2013) -- The Kannapolis Intimidators extended their season-best winning streak to seven games by completing a series sweep in Greensboro with a 6-3 win over the Grasshoppers on Monday at NewBridge Bank Park. The streak is the longest for Kannapolis since June 2012.

The Intimidators broke a 3-3 tie with a three run sixth inning to chase Greensboro starter Austin Brice from the game. Jacob May, Tim Anderson and Keon Barnum all added RBI-singles to reclaim the lead.

The rally put starter Frank Montas in line for a win after 5.0 innings of work, allowing three runs on three hits with three walks -- all in the fourth inning -- and six strikeouts. Montas (4-10), whom the White Sox acquired from the Red Sox in a deadline deal that sent Major Leaguer Jake Peavy to Boston, picked up his second straight win and is now 2-1 with the Intimidators

Greensboro threatened to cut into Kannapolis' 6-3 lead in the seventh inning, loading the bases against Ryan Bollinger with one out. Facing the go-ahead run, Bollinger got Blake Barber to ground into an inning- ending 4-6-3 double play. Bollinger worked 3.0 scoreless innings, including perfect frames in the 6th and 8th.

Stew Brase worked around a single for a scoreless ninth inning and his second save (7) of the series.

Jacob May helped Kannapolis to a quick start by leading off the game with double, stealing third base and scoring on a Jason Coats groundout for a 1-0 lead.

Coats added to the lead with a two-run home run to the opposite field in the third inning. Cleuluis Rondon led off the inning by legging out a bunt-single, and with two outs Coats blasted them both home for a 3-0 lead.

After giving up a leadoff double in the bottom of the first, Montas retired the next eight batters. He worked around a two-out double in the third inning to strike out the side.

Greensboro trimmed the Intimidators lead to a run in the home half of the fourth. Montas walked the first three batters, and Jesus Solorzano and Cody Keefer added RBI-groundouts, cutting the Kannapolis lead, 3-2. The Hoppers tied the game in the fifth when Rehiner Cordova, who led off the inning with a double, scored on a wild pitch with two outs, knotting the game, 3-3.

The Intimidators return home on Tuesday, Aug. 20, for a six-game home stand against the Savannah Sand Gnats (Mets) and Rome Braves (Braves). Kannapolis sends RHP Adam Lopez (3-3, 2.98) to the mound to start Tuesday's game. Tuesday's are Two-for-Tuesday presented by Arby's with 2-for-1 tickets with any Arby's proof of purchase.
