Adam Brooks thought he had won the game for Toronto with 23.8 seconds left but Ottawa had an answer as Batheron scored from an almost impossible angle to send the game into overtime.

The game was tied 2-2 heading into the third before the two teams exploded for three goals in 74 seconds. Ottawa jumped ahead 3-2 through Burzan who scored short-handed after Ryan Scarfo forced a turnover at centre ice at 8:11.

Toronto evened the game up 28 seconds later through JJ Piccinich on the power play but the Senators re-took the lead through Lyle whose wrister from the right face-off circle restored the Ottawa lead with 9:35 to play. Carl Grundstrom tied the game at 4-4 with five minutes to play as he buried a centering pass from Jeremy Bracco.

The Senators had the only goal of the opening period and it came through Stallard as he jammed home a loose puck on the power play at 14:17 after Toronto goalie Ian Scott couldn't cover the puck.

Toronto equalized at 8:13 of the second as Semyon Der-Arguchintsev buried a centering feed on a close-ranged 2-on-1 but the Senators immediately replied through Leier just 31 seconds later as he converted an odd-man rush after taking a feed from Lajoie. Belleville forward Scarfo collected the secondary assist.

The Maple Leafs tied the game at 2-2 with 1:21 left in the second through Derian Plouffe as he collected a rebound from Mandolese and beat the Sens 2018 draft pick.

The Sens were captained by Belleville defenceman Lajoie, who had two assists in the game, as did Scarfo.
