Senators Sign Robin Lehner To Entry-Level Contract
March 31, 2010 - American Hockey League (AHL) - Binghamton Senators News Release
OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 31, 2010) - Ottawa Senators general manager Bryan Murray announced today that the club has signed goaltender Robin Lehner to a three-year entry-level contract. Lehner will finish this season with the club's American Hockey League affiliate, the Binghamton Senators, on an amateur try-out agreement.
Lehner, 18, was the Senators' second of two second-round picks (46th overall) in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. A native of Goteborg, Sweden, Lehner concluded his first season in the Ontario Hockey League when the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds were eliminated by the Plymouth Whalers four games to one in the OHL's quarter-final round. The Soo selected Lehner ninth overall in the 2009 Canadian Hockey League import draft.
In his rookie season, Lehner ranked eighth among OHL goaltenders, recording a 2.80 goals-against-average, .918 savepercentage, five shutouts and a 27-12-0-3 record in 47 games. He was honoured twice as the CHL's goaltender of the week for the periods ending Nov. 22 and Jan. 31. Lehner was also named OHL goaltender of the month for December and represented the Greyhounds on the OHL's Western Conference All-Star roster.
In helping the Greyhounds to a regular-season record of 36-27-1-4 and third place in the West Division, Lehner was named the co-winner of the team's most valuable player award. He set a team record with his fifth shutout of the season (4-0 at Sarnia on March 4) to surpass former Senator Ray Emery, who held the previous record with four set during the 2001-02 campaign.
Prior to the 2009-10 season, Lehner was a member of Sweden's Frolunda Indians organization. He played on their under-18 squad during the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons, and the under-20 team during a portion of both the 2007-08 and 2008-09 schedules. Lehner has also represented Sweden with the under-16 national team and the national squad at the 2009 World Under-18 Hockey Championship in Fargo, N.D.
