Seitzer's Big Day, Triple Play Lifts Barons to Second Straight Win

April 26, 2017 - Southern League (SL1)
Birmingham Barons News Release

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Wednesday morning's game had the makings of a rough outing for Barons starter Thaddius Lowry as he allowed the first four batters to reach, including two runs.

But then the game turned on the fifth batter as Alex Glenn smacked a line drive right back at Lowry. The big right hander snagged the liner, turned around to throw out Brian Anderson off of second and then SS Eddy Alvarez completed the rare triple play by throwing back to first to catch John Norwood well of the base.

The Barons' improbable first inning defensive play kept the game within reach and allowed the bats to work their way back into the game. That started as early as the bottom of the first, when Cameron Seitzer ripped his first of three base hits on the day, scoring Alvarez to cut the lead to 2-1.

After a Jumbo Shrimp sac fly in the third, newcomer Jeff Gelalich made his presence known in his first action as a Baron as he clobbered a two-run double down the right field line to tie the game in the fourth.

An Alvarez RBI groundout gave the Barons a 4-3 lead, but Jumbo Shrimp 1B Taylor Ard lined a solo home run off of another Barons newcomer Jake Dunning out of the bullpen.

The game would remain tied until the eighth inning, when Seitzer's bat and then defense would save the day again. The left fielder collected his third hit of the day, an RBI single knocking in Jake Peter. Seitzer followed the hit up with a sliding catch to rob Cam Maron of a hit to lead off the ninth and preserve the 5-4 victory.

Lowry settled down to pitch five innings, surrendering four hits, three runs (one earned), while striking out one. Miguel Chalas pitched two scoreless innings in relief to earn his first victory of the season, while Tyler Higgins took his third loss of the season in as many decisions.

The Barons will hit the road tomorrow evening to Montgomery to face the Biscuits for the second time in two weeks. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. CT. RHP Matt Cooper (0-0, 2.63) is set to be on the mound for Birmingham, while righty Greg Harris (1-0, 1.00) will take the ball for the Jumbo Shrimp. Curt Bloom will bring you all the action on WERC 105.5 FM and the iHeart Radio app, beginning with the Coca-Cola Pregame Show beginning at 6:55 p.m. CT.
