Saint John Sea Dogs News Release

SAINT JOHN - General Manager Darrell Young announced today the Saint John Sea Dogs have recalled forward Alex Lafreniere and defenceman Ian Smallwood from the Saint John Vito's of the New Brunswick/PEI Major Midget Hockey League (NBPEIMMHL).

The players were among five Sea Dogs prospects who won silver medals in last week's 2016 Telus Cup in Quispamsis.

Lafreniere, 16, finished second in regular season scoring with the Vito's with 15 goals and 34 points in 35 games. The Gatineau, Quebec, native had six goals and 21 points in ten playoff games and led the league in playoff scoring.

He was selected by the Sea Dogs in the eleventh round (190th overall) of the 2015 QMJHL Entry Draft and appeared in two regular season games. He had two goals and three points in four games at the Telus Cup.

Smallwood, 17, earned a first-team all-star nod with the Vito's after leading all NBPEIMMHL defencemen in goals with twenty - tied for fourth among all players - and finishing second in points by a defenceman with 33 in 31 games. The native of St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, led the league with 14 power play goals and ended the season 12th in scoring.

He was selected by the Sea Dogs in the ninth round (159th overall) of the 2015 QMJHL Entry Draft and posted one assist in eleven games this season. He had a goal and three points in seven games at the Telus Cup.

Lafreniere and Smallwood also helped the Vito's win the 2016 Atlantic Midget Championship.

Both players will be available for tonight's Game 3 of the QMJHL President Cup semifinals between the Sea Dogs and Shawinigan Cataractes.

Game time is 7 p.m. at Harbour Station. Tickets are available at the Harbour Station Box Office, online at harbourstation.ca or by calling 657-1234.
