Saint John Sea Dogs News Release

SAINT JOHN - Phelix Martineau's second goal 1:36 into overtime gave the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles a 2-1 victory over the Saint John Sea Dogs, in the opening game of the second half of the season, Thursday at Harbour Station.

Cedric Pare scored the only goal for Saint John (10-19-5-2) while goalie Matthew Williams turned aside 45 shots.

Cape Breton (16-16-2-1) snapped a five-game losing skid.

The Sea Dogs got the only goal of the opening period nearly nine minutes in.

It came on a delayed penalty call.

Matt Green grabbed the puck behind his own net and fed a pass up the middle of the ice to Cole Reginato. Pare created a 2-on-1 as the extra attacker off the bench. Reginato slipped the puck from the left wing in front of the net where Pare chipped a shot past the glove of Kevin Mandolese in the Screaming Eagles' goal.

Cape Breton evened the score with a power play goal late in the second.

Martineau took a feed near the top of the right circle and whipped a wrist shot through the legs of Williams.

The visitors peppered Williams with 19 shots in the third period, but the 19-year-old stood tall and forced overtime.

Martineau's winner came 96 seconds into the extra frame.

Leon Gawanke took a pass in the high slot and fed it back into the left circle where the Cape Breton captain sent a one-timer past the blocker of a helpless Williams.

Mandolese earned the win with 20 saves. Williams' 45 stops prompted a first-star selection in a losing cause.

Martineau took second star with two goals. Pare was named third star in front of 4,062 fans in attendance.

Saint John's next game is Friday, December 29th, at 7 p.m. against the Moncton Wildcats at Harbour Station. It's the Sea Dogs' New Year's celebration! Tickets are available at the Harbour Station Box Office and online .
