SEA DOGS OPEN ROAD TRIP WITH LOSS TOGATINEAU

HULL, PQ - Ostap Safin scored the only goal for the Saint John Sea Dogs in a 2-1 loss to the Gatineau Olympiques at Centre Robert-Guertin.

Pier-Olivier Lacombe and Alexandre Landreville scored for Gatineau (13-10-2-2), which have points in five straight games. The game was the first of three in three days for Saint John (7-15-4-2).

The Sea Dogs opened the scoring only 81 seconds into the game. Captain Joe Veleno carried the puck up the left wing and attempted a wrister, but fanned on the shot. Safin followed up and ripped a low wrist shot that snuck inside the left post, past the left foot of goalie Tristan Berube. The Olympiques tied it nearly five minutes later when Lacombe corralled the rebound of his own shot, which had been blocked, and snapped a wrist shot past the glove of Matt Williams.

Landreville gave Gatineau a 2-1 lead with more than six minutes left in the period by gathering a loose puck in the middle of the slot and whistling a wrist shot over Williams' blocker. The puck went off the crossbar, and then bounced off the back of Williams and into the goal. There was no scoring in the second period. Saint John's best chance came with about five minutes remaining when Anthony Boucher chased down a loose puck in the left circle of the Gatineau zone and saw William Poirier wide-open in front of the net. Poirier snapped a quick, low shot that Berube kicked aside with his left leg.

The Sea Dogs thought they had tied the game with seven minutes left in the third. Veleno was lurking at the right side of the goal when he reached to the end boards to grab the puck. The 17-year-old centre tried to stuff it inside the left post, but Berube kept it out with his pad. The puck bounced through the crease and near the goal line when play was blown dead. A video review confirmed the puck had not crossed the goal line.

Berube made 23 saves for the win. Williams turned aside 27 shots in a losing cause. Landreville's game-winning goal made him first star while Safin's marker prompted a second-star selection. Olympiques' defenceman Darien Kielb claimed third star in front of 2,170 fans in attendance.
