Sea Dogs Name Stefan Legein Assistant Coach

The Saint John Sea Dogs are proud to name Stefan Legein as the team's new Assistant Coach.

Last season, Legein was Assistant and Video Coach with the Mississauga Steelheads (OHL).

"It is an honour to be given this opportunity with such a great franchise and in a hockey-loving market" said Legein. "I am extremely excited to call Saint John home and begin working with the incredible group of talent brought together by Trevor and Josh. Since I ended my playing career, I have focused my attention on player development and I feel that it is where the organization is right now, it is a perfect fit."

Since retirement from professional hockey, the former CHL standout has been a skills coach for a number of elite athletes including working this off-season with NHL forwards Taylor Hall, Jason Spezza, and John Tavares.

"I have known Stef for many years" said Maple Leafs centreman John Tavares. "We were on the same World Junior team together when we won gold. He works with me on the ice during the off-seasons. He is a great skills coach and he helps me get better every time we're out there."

As a player, Legein was a junior star with the Mississauga Ice Dogs and endeared himself to junior hockey fans with his in-your-face style of play, including a 43 goal season. He played in the 2007 CHL Top Prospects Game and earned a gold medal as a member of Team Canada in the 2008 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships.

"After an exhaustive search of candidates from across North America and Europe we are excited to have Stefan join our coaching staff" said Sea Dogs Head Coach, Josh Dixon. "With both his professional playing and OHL coaching background, along with his passion for player development, he is an excellent addition to our team. Stefan has proven to be very talented in developing players from major junior up to NHL All-Stars and will no doubt make a big impact assisting with the development of our young core."

After being drafted 37th overall by the Columbus Blue Jackets, Legein would go on to play nine seasons of professional hockey in the AHL, ECHL, and Europe. Since retirement, Legein has been has been an advocate in the hockey community for mental health awareness and the importance of player support.

"Stefan is an immensely talented hockey player with a big heart" said Sea Dogs President & General Manager, Trevor Georgie. "On the ice and behind the bench, our players can look forward to him bringing energy and passion, as well as acute attention to detail. His experience off the ice will be equally as valuable for our young group as he has lived through both triumphs and challenges. All of his experiences will make him a great resource for our young players as they pursue their hockey dreams."

Legein joins a fresh-look 2018-2019 Sea Dogs with a number of talented young players, including three 2018 first round selections and 1st overall CHL Import Draft selection.

"Having this many high draft picks on a team is very special" said Legein. "With the current staff put in place by management, I feel they have created an environment for the kids to grow and develop into not only high end hockey talent, but outstanding members of the community."

Legein will be moving to Saint John with his wife Shannon and newborn son, Emerson.
