SEA DOGS EARN ROAD WIN OVER

SYDNEY, NS - William Poirier scored twice as part of a four-goal second period, leading the Saint John Sea Dogs to a 5-4 victory over the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles, Wednesday at Centre 200.

Thomas Ashe netted his first goal in his first QMJHL game for Saint John (6-13-4-2), while Samuel Leblanc and Matt Green also tallied. Nick Deakin-Poot added two assists.

Brooklyn Kalmikov posted two goals for Cape Breton (12-10-1-1). Jordan Ty Fournier and Leon Gawanke had one each.

The Screaming Eagles opened the scoring just 27 seconds into the game when former Sea Dog prospect Declan Smith threw a pass from the left circle to the front of the goal, where Fournier steered it past the glove of goalie Matthew Williams.

Leblanc tied it with 47.7 seconds remaining in the first.

Ostap Safin took a pass on the right side of the Cape Breton zone and saw Leblanc open in the middle. The second-year winger ripped a low wrist shot that beat Screaming Eagles' goalie Kyle Jessiman under his glove.

But the home side regained the lead 35 seconds later when Kalmikov batted home the rebound of a Phelix Martineau shot from the left side.

Saint John trailed 2-1 after twenty minutes.

Green kicked off a four-goal middle frame for the Sea Dogs with his third marker in his last five games.

The Hammonds Plains, Nova Scotia, native joined Deakin-Poot on a 2-on-1. Deakin-Poot had the puck on the left wing and spun a backhand pass in front to Green, who flicked a wrister past Jessiman's blocker.

It became a two-goal lead 67 seconds later.

A scramble in the Screaming Eagles' zone saw the puck bounce back toward the middle of the blueline. Ashe, in his first career game, fired a low wrist that snuck inside the left post for his first QMJHL goal.

Poirier scored shorthanded with three minutes left in the second to create a 4-2 score.

Two Cape Breton players collided near the right point in the Sea Dogs' zone, allowing Anthony Boucher to poke the puck out to neutral territory. Poirier broke in alone and deked to his backhand, lifting the puck past Jessiman's glove.

The Screaming Eagles still had power play time with which to work, and they capitalized 51 seconds after Poirer's goal.

Kalmikov potted his second of the night, corralling a loose puck on the right wing side of the crease and wristing it past the glove of Williams.

Saint John restored its two-goal lead less than a minute later.

Screaming Eagles' defenceman Leon Gawanke attempted to slap a pass from the right side of his own zone, but his stick broke in half when he struck the puck. Deakin-Poot intercepted the feed and saw Poirier alone in front of the goal. The Valleyfield, Quebec, product slipped the puck between Jessiman's legs to make it 5-3.

Jessiman was replaced in the Cape Breton goal by Kevin Mandolese.

Gawanke cut the Sea Dog lead to one goal with another power play strike eight minutes into the third, a low wrister from the middle of the blueline that went through the legs of a screened Williams.

The Screaming Eagles pulled Mandolese for an extra skater with under three minutes left, and enjoyed a two-man advantage for the final 79 seconds following a Saint John penalty, but they could not tie the game.

Williams turned aside 27 shots for the win. Jessiman took the loss with ten saves in more than 38 minutes of action. Mandolese stopped seven shots in nearly 19 minutes of relief.

Poirier's two goals made him first star while Kalmikov snared second star with his pair. Martineau earned third star with two assists in front of 2,182 fans in attendance.
