Saint John Sea Dogs News Release

CHARLOTTETOWN, PEI --- On the strength of a 27-save performance by overage goaltender Marc-Antoine Gélinas, the league-leading Saint John Sea Dogs defeated the P.E.I. Rocket by a score of 4-1 at the Charlottetown Civic Centre on Friday night. Saint John has now won 21 games in a row, four shy of both the QMJHL and CHL record.

After incurring a 1-0 deficit over the course of the opening twenty minutes of play the Sea Dogs turned in a dominant performance in the second period, outshooting their opponents 20-6 while scoring twice to pull ahead 2-1 on the scoreboard. Saint John further added to their lead in the third period, ultimately taking the decision by three goals.

Nick Petersen, Mike Hoffman, Stephen MacAulay, and Nicholas Pard all scored for the Sea Dogs in Friday's impressive road victory, while Adam Polasek tallied the lone marker for the Rocket on the evening. Anaheim Ducks prospect Marco Cousineau (45 saves), meanwhile, suffered the loss in net for the home team.

The lone goal of the first period came in the third minute of play courtesy a booming one-timer off the stick of Rocket defenseman Adam Polasek. Chris Doyle and Samson Mahbod both picked up assists on Polasek's power play goal, the fourth such tally of his career.

Saint John tied things up at one apiece on a man-up marker of their own, as a net-charging Nicholas Pard buried a nifty cross-ice feed from Stanislav Galiev at the 7:53 mark of the second period. Pard has now scored four goals in his last three games, improving his 2009-10 total to nine in the process.

Superstar winger Mike Hoffman gave the Sea Dogs their first lead of the match late in the middle frame, banging home a rebound produced by a Yann Sauvé point shot to register the 21st goal of his overage season.

Marc-Antoine Gélinas came up with some big saves early in the third period, backstopping his team to a pivotal early-frame penalty kill which kept Saint John's one-goal lead in tact.

Nick Petersen then gave the Sea Dogs an insurance marker 13:22 into regulation's final frame, knocking a loose puck past Cousineau at the end of a lengthy scramble in the hosts' zone to record his 19th offensive strike of the year.

An empty-net tally by sophomore centre Stephen MacAulay sealed the deal for Saint John, who take a 3-2 lead in their season series with P.E.I. by virtue of Friday's 4-1 victory.

The Sea Dogs now own an incredible record of 29-4-1-0 midway through their fifth anniversary season.

Up next for the Port City's major junior squad is a Saturday night showdown with the Acadie-Bathurst Titan at the K.C. Irving Regional Centre. The puck drops at 7pm as Saint John looks to improve to 5-0 versus Acadie-Bathurst this season and tie the 1967-68 Estevan Bruins (WHL) for fourth place on the Canadian Hockey League's all-time consecutive wins list at 22.
