Sea Dogs Drop Contest in Cape Breton

SYDNEY, NS - The Saint John Sea Dogs lost to the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles 5-2 in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action Friday night.

Noah Zilbert scored his first QMJHL goal and Marcus Cuomo added another for the Sea Dogs while Sebastien Auger made 28 saves while facing 32 shots in the loss. Saint John now sits with a record of 10-12-0-0.

Kyle Farrell and Alexandre Lavoie had two goals each and Jakub Culek added a single in response for the Screaming Eagles while William Carrier added four helpers. David Honzik stopped 3 of 5 while playing 7:25 in net for Cape Breton before giving way to Philippe Trudeau, who stopped all 17 shots in 52:34 of play. The Eagles now have a record of 7-11-2-3 following the win.

The first period had a period of fast and furious play, started by the Screaming Eagles. The Eagles drew first blood with Lavoie scoring his 16that 5:03 of the first.

The Sea Dogs drew even as Cuomo used his secret weapon to beat Honzik at 6:19. The rookie from St. John's, NL beat Honzik with the backhand for his fourth of the year. Ryan Kelly notched an assist on the play for his first career QMJHL point and Oliver Cooper tallied the other assist on the play.

Cape Breton took the lead again shortly with newly acquired, overager Culek beating Auger at 7:03 for his first of the year.

Things in the first came fast and furious as Zilbert tallied his first career QMJHL marker with a beautiful shot, beating Honzik at 7:25 to keeps things even. Olivier LeBlanc and Aidan Kelly notched the assists on the play.

Jonathan Huberdeau was very close to setting up Ryan Tesink for another goal on a Eagle turnover with a beautiful pass snuck through the defence. Tesink just missed the feed with a wide-open cage, while Honzik was down and out on the other side of the net.

Stephen MacAulay had a great shorthanded chance very close to the three-minute mark of the middle frame after stealing the puck and making a great move to get past the Cape Breton defenceman. Trudeau got just enough on MacAulay's wrist shot to change the puck's direction and force it wide.

Cuomo made a great toe drag to sneak past the defenceman and wristing a shot for a great chance for his second goal.

Auger did his part to keep the Sea Dogs in the game, coming up with great saves in back-to-back shifts just before the mid way point of the second.

Farrell made a nice move to beat Auger with a backhand shot on the power play at 16:03. Carrier's assist on the play was his third of the night.

Kevin Gagne narrowly missed with only seconds to play in the middle frame, which ended 3-2 in favour of Cape Breton.

Auger continued his stellar play in the third period, stopping a point blank chance with the Screaming Eagles on the power play just past the six-minute mark.

Farrell extended the Cape Breton lead to two at 12:46, with Carrier getting his fourth assist of the night.

Lavoie added a late empty net goal, icing the game with only one second remaining.
