Sea Dogs Bring on the Fireworks, Beat Cats 9-3

(Manchester, NH) - RHP Blake Maxwell (1-5) earned his first Double-A win and the Sea Dogs (39-42) pounded out 14 hits in a 9-3 win over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (37-45) on Sunday night at Merchantsauto.com Stadium. Portland evened the 3-game set at one game apiece and improved to 8-3 over the Fisher Cats this season.
SS Argenis Diaz, 3B Jorge Jimenez, LF Ryan Kalish and CF Josh Reddick all had 2 RBI's for the Sea Dogs. Maxwell fell behind right away on DH David Cooper's RBI single to plate LF Todd Donovan in the first inning. The North Carolina native did not allow a run over the next four innings and retired the final seven batters faced.
Kalish tied the game on the first pitch of the third inning with his second homer of the season off losing pitcher RHP Marty McLeary (1-1). In the fourth, Reddick provided the go-ahead hit with a bloop-single to right-center field, scoring RF Reid Engel. McLeary, a former Red Sox farmhand, yielded seven hits and two runs over 5 IP.
LHP Andrew Dobies relieved Maxwell in the sixth inning and worked a perfect frame on three ground outs. Portland's offense scored three times off reliever LHP Edgar Estanga in the top of the seventh inning. Jimenez singled, DH Jon Still (0-for-2, 2 BB) walked and 1B Lars Anderson nailed an RBI double to right field. C Juan Apodaca was intentionally walked to load the bases. SS Argenis Diaz grounded a 2-runs single to center field. New Hampshire plated their second run of the night in the seventh inning with Donavan's RBI single off Dobies.
Portland scored four runs in the eighth inning as five consecutive batters reached base. The inning opened on 2B Ryan Khoury's single and he scored on Reddick's RBI triple off the right-field wall. Kalish greeted RHP Celson Polanco with an RBI single and Jimenez clubbed a 2-run homer to right field. New Hampshire added the final run on CF Darin Mastroianni's infield RBI single off LHP Dustin Richardson in the eighth. RHP Chad Rhoades tossed a perfect ninth to seal the win for the Sea Dogs.
The Sea Dogs and Fisher Cats play the rubber game of their 3-game set on Monday afternoon beginning at 12:05. RHP Ryne Lawson (1-7, 6.20) will make his 12th start of the season and face spot starter RHP Adrian Martin (0-1, 3.64).
Notes...Khoury snapped an 0-for-16 slump with a single in the eighth inning...New Hampshire 1B Brian Dopirak had his franchise record 18-game hitting streak snapped by going 0-for-4...The top three batters (Reddick, Kalish and Jimenez) for Portland went a combined 8-for-16 (.500), 2 HR, 6 RBI and 5 runs scored...Portland snapped New Hampshire's season-high 5-game winning streak and improved to 6-2 at Merchantsauto.com Stadium.
