ROSEMONT - NPF Rookie of the Year Jessie Scroggins delivered a pair of RBI in her introduction to the postseason, but the Chicago Bandits dropped Game 1 of the 2018 Championship Series to the USSSA Pride by a score of 3-2 Thursday night at Parkway Bank Sports Complex.
Scroggins, who supplied a three-hit postseason debut, erased a 1-0 deficit in the third and briefly gave the Bandits a 2-1 lead in the fifth before USSSA used a late home run off the bat of Shelby Pendley to steal the best-of-five opener.
Bandits southpaw Danielle O'Toole suffered a difficult loss after she surrendered the two-run blast to Pendley. The former Arizona standout wiggled out of a pair of jams in the third and fourth frames before Pendley's ultimate blow.
Right-hander Rachele Fico did not factor into the decision in a starting effort. She tossed the opening 2.1 innings and allowed just one run - a solo shot from veteran left fielder Megan Wiggins - on two hits.
Meanwhile, Pride starter Jolene Henderson solidified her 2018 NPF Pitcher of the Year honor after the right-hander supplied a complete-game performance. Henderson scattered four hits across the seven innings and struck out four.
Bandits rookie right-hander Aleshia Ocasio also pitcher in relief and delivered a scoreless sixth frame. However, the Bandits could not muster the tying run in the seventh.
The Bandits and Pride will take the field for Game 2 of the Championship Series on Friday night at Parkway Bank Sports Complex. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be broadcast via ESPN+.
