Scrappers Win in 13 Innings

Norwich, CT "" The Mahoning Valley Scrappers (19-25) defeated the Connecticut Tigers (19-26) by a score 4-3 Friday night at Dodd Stadium. It took 13 innings for the Scrappers to pull out the victory over the Tigers. In the 13th inning Juan Romero (3-6) hit an RBI single that scored 1B Nellie Rodriguez (0-4) to put the Scrappers in front 4-3.
The Tigers had several opportunities with runners in scoring position, but couldn't get the key hit when it mattered the most. The Tigers went 2-11 with runners in scoring position and left a total of 10 on base. In the ninth inning the LF Tyler Gibson (2-5) hit a one out triple. On a failed squeeze bunt attempt by SS Curt Powell (1-6), Gibson was tagged out in a rundown and ended the Tigers threat in the ninth inning.
All did not go well either for the Scrappers offense as they went 4-17 with runners in scoring position and left 10 on base. RF Joel Mejia (4-5) had a strong performance at the plate as he picked up four hits all that were singles. Credit the Scrappers bullpen that used a combine four pitchers that pitched eight innings and allowed one run on six hits while striking out 11 batters. RHP Trevor Frank (1-3) picked up his first win of the season pitching two scoreless innings and striking out three. RHP Manuel Carmona picked up his third save pitching a scoreless 13th inning.
The Tigers and the Scrappers play game two of their three-game series tomorrow night at Dodd Stadium at 7:05 p.m. In game two LHP Alex Phillips (2-0, 2.68) gets the start for the Tigers. The Scrappers send out Rob Whitenack (2-4, 3.99. Tomorrow night is Backus Hospital Night: CT Tigers Hat Giveaway. The first 1,000 fans through the gates will receive a CT Tigers Hat.
