Scouting for a RiverKings Home Opener Victory

September 28, 2010 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Mississippi RiverKings News Release

SOUTHAVEN, MS-The Mississippi RiverKings will showcase the Boy Scouts of America-Chickasaw Council as the team's nonprofit M.V.P (Money-Volunteers-Publicity) nonprofit organization for the team's Home Opener against the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs on October 16.

Boy Scout troops will be out en masse for an evening of fellowship, fundraising, and of course, a special Hockey Event Patch to be awarded upon attending the game.

The Boy Scouts of America, whose mission is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law, is one of the largest value-based youth development organizations in the nation.

"I enjoy working with folks who really believe in scouting and everything it stands for," said Debi Haskins of Senatobia, a mother of four Eagle Scouts. "I think we all hope that we can make the difference in one boy's life and that boy will go on to do great things."

Upon joining the Boy Scouts, every member must memorize the Scout Law: "A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent," and the Scout Oath, which says, "On my honor, I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; to help other people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight."

The Scout Oath and Law are the two foundations that help develop future generations into leaders and responsible adults. The Boy Scouts believes that helping youth is the key "to building a more conscientious, responsible, and productive society."

The road to becoming an Eagle Scout (the highest rank possible) usually begins with the Cub Scouts and is divided into age-based levels of Tiger, Wolf, Bear, and Webelos Scouts.

Boy Scouts is the main program for the BSA and advancement is symbolized through seven badges. The scout badge is the first awarded, and it is given when a member achieves certain levels of knowledge of the ideals and programs of the Scouts. The Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life and Eagle Badges complete the Scout ranks.

Beyond making enduring friendships with both other scouts and adult leaders, many members also learn to understand the world around them in a different light. Hundreds of volunteer hours are performed by scouts annually and have provided communities across America with beautification projects; food, clothing and book drives; blood drives; safety rodeos for kids; construction and cleanup in our national and state parks; and improvements in physical facilities at churches and schools, to name a few. While communities benefit from these service projects, Haskins says the Boy Scouts participants are the greatest beneficiaries as they develop a sense of pride and accomplishment in a job well done.

"The service projects that they participate in can allow them to see from a different perspective," she said. "They develop empathy for less fortunate folks and see that they have a responsibility to give back to their family, school, and community."

The Chickasaw Council provides Scouting and serves 17 counties in the Mid-South, including Shelby County in Tennesseee, Crittenden County in Arkansas, and Bolivar, Carroll, Coahoma, DeSoto, Grenada, Humphries, LeFlore, Montgomery, Panola, Quitman, Sunflower, Tallahatchie, Tate, Tunica, and Washington counties in Mississippi.

You don't have to wear a uniform or even work directly with young people in order to have a direct impact on the Scouting program. "Time, Talent and Treasure" are the three main areas in which parents, alumni, friends, and volunteers can help the Boy Scouts - Chickasaw Council and have a direct impact on the lives of the youth they serve.
