Scoop's Reading Challenge Reaches New Record

February 25, 2009 - American Association (AA)
Pensacola Pelicans News Release

The Pensacola Pelicans , WSRE, PBS for the Gulf Coast, Levin Rinke Resort Realty, and Portofino Island are proud to announce new participation records for the 5th annual "Scoop's Reading Challenge." Over 18,000 students in Escambia, Santa Rosa and Okaloosa Counties, as well as private and home schools will be rounding the bases for literacy this year!

"Scoop's Reading Challenge" offers a fun and unique way to engage students in reading. This incentive-based program encourages students to set goals and read to achieve those goals. Students participating in the program have the opportunity to earn tickets to a Pensacola Pelicans baseball game, in addition to cool prizes from Levin Rinke Resort Realty, Portofino Island, and AT&T, the Real Yellow Pages. The program is set up on a "base" system. For each reading goal a student completes, they will advance to the next base, thus earning them a ticket voucher for a Pelicans baseball game.

Pelicans General Manager, Talmadge Nunnari notes the growth of the reading program, "We are extremely proud of the success that "Scoop's Reading Challenge" has experienced since its first year. We began with about 1,600 students in 2005 and now have over 18,000 students reading in our schools. Offering students a night at a baseball game is a great incentive for reaching their reading goals."

For more information on the program or to register your classroom, please contact the Pelicans office at 934-8444 or visit the website at www.pensacolapelicans.com or wsre.org.
