KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (July 2, 2013) -- The Augusta GreenJackets quieted the Kannapolis Intimidators, 3-1, on Tuesday night at CMC-NorthEast Stadium to even the series at a game apiece. GreenJackets starter Justin Schumer, who graduated from East Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte and pitched at UNC-Asheville in college, earned the win for the visiting club.
Schumer (3-6) worked 5 1/3 scoreless innings, limiting Kannapolis to three hits. He worked around five walks, including two in the fourth inning. The Intimidators couldn't cash in with bases loaded and no outs in the fourth, leaving the bases loaded. Kannapolis stranded eight base runners on the night.
Augusta plated two runs in the fifth inning. Eric Sim drew a one-out walk after falling behind Kyle Hansen 1-2 in the count. Alberto Robles followed with a single, and Keon Barnum misplayed a Jesus Galindo hard ground ball at first base allowing a run to score. Robles scored on a Hansen balk for a 2-0 Augusta advantage.
Tim Anderson put Kannapolis on the board in the home half of the seventh with a sac-fly to right field, bringing home Yoandy Barroso to Cut the GreenJackets lead in half, 2-1.
Hansen (2-4) took the loss for Kannapolis, his second against Augusta, giving up two runs (one earned) on six hits over 5.0 innings, striking out four and walking one.
Tyler Mizenko worked a scoreless ninth inning for Augusta for the save (19).
The Intimidators and GreenJackets play the series rubber match on Wednesday, July 3, as the Intimidators host their Independence Holiday Fireworks Show presented by the City of Kannapolis.
