Sardinas, Rainiers Walk Off Over Cubs Luis Sardinas goes 4-for-5 with two RBI and one run scored

TACOMA, Wash. - Luis Sardinas hit a game winning RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Tacoma Rainiers (26-16) a 7-6 victory over the Iowa Cubs (18-22) on Saturday night at Cheney Stadium.

The Rainiers offense was led by third baseman Luis Sardinas (4x5), second baseman Daniel Robertson (2x4), first baseman Efren Navarro (2x4), and center fielder Boog Powell (2x5). The four multi-hit performances produced a combined four runs and four RBI.

Tacoma opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning with a two-run double down the right field line from Mike Zunino, scoring Stefen Romero and Navarro. Sardinas following with an RBI single to give Tacoma the early 3-0 advantage.

Robertson laced a two-out, two-run triple into the right-center field gap in the bottom of the third inning, extending the Rainiers lead to 5-0.

Iowa answered with four runs in the top of the fourth inning. Albert Almora Jr. doubled to open the inning and came around to score on a single from Matt Murton. Two batters later, Juan Perez smacked a three-run home run over the left-center field fence, cutting the Rainiers lead to one at 5-4.

Tacoma got one run back in the home half of the fifth inning when Dario Pizzano worked a bases loaded walk to score Navarro.

Daniel Vogelbach evened the score at 6-6 in the top of the fifth inning by lifting a two-run home run over the right field wall, ending Rainiers starting pitcher James Paxton's night.

With two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning, Sardinas roped a single into left field to score Mike Baxter, propelling the Rainiers to their fifth consecutive win.

Paul Fry, Jonathan Aro, and David Rollins worked the final 3.1 innings for Tacoma, holding the Cubs scoreless while only allowing one hit and striking out five.

Paxton registered 5.2 innings of work, allowing six runs on seven hits and seven strikeouts, while surrendering two home runs.

The Rainiers and Cubs wrap-up their four-game series tomorrow, Sunday, May 22. Left-hander Brad Mills (0-0, 3.60) is scheduled to take the mound for Tacoma, while righty Drew Rucinski (2-3, 6.18) is expected to start for Iowa.
