Santa Cruz Warriors News Release
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - Playing for first place in the West Division, the Santa Cruz Warriors fell to the Bakersfield Jam 99-89 Monday night in the first-ever home loss at the Kaiser Permanente Arena.
The Santa Cruz Warriors were led by Stefhon Hannah, who logged a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds, and was three assists shy of a triple-double. Taylor Griffin added 16 points and nine rebounds, while Cameron Jones chipped in with 15 points and six boards.
The Bakersfield Jam were paced by Jerel McNeal's 21 points and Brian Butch's double-double of 13 points and game-high 14 rebounds. Diante Garrett, on assignment from the Phoenix Suns, added 15 points, seven of which were in the first quarter. Renaldo Major finished with 16 points.
Santa Cruz fell behind early, but was able to pull within two at the half behind 15 points from Hannah in the second quarter. Mickell Gladness opened the third quarter with back-to-back slam-dunks, but after three more lead changes, the Jam pulled away for good. Santa Cruz went on an 11-2 run with two minutes left in the game, but it was not enough and Bakersfield held on for the 10-point victory.
Santa Cruz out-rebounded Bakersfield (58-52), but committed nearly twice as many turnovers (21-11). Santa Cruz shot 36.0% from the field and 36.8% from behind the arc, while Bakersfield connected 38.3% from the field but just 28.1% from three-point territory.
Bakersfield moves to 15-7, taking sole possession of first place in the West Division, with Santa Cruz falling to second place.
