Santa Cruz Warriors Defeat Reno Bighorns in Season Opener

RENO, Nev. - The Santa Cruz Warriors beat the Reno Bighorns 101-95 Friday night, beginning the inaugural season of Santa Cruz basketball with a win.

Kent Bazemore, the guard/forward who was assigned Friday morning from the Golden State Warriors, had a game-high 27 points in 9-15 shooting and 5 steals in 33 minutes played. Bazemore was one of 6 Santa Cruz Warriors who scored in double figures. The Reno Bighorns were led by Garrett Temple's 23 points on 8-22 shooting from the field.

Taylor Griffin had the only double-double of the night, with 12 points and 10 rebounds, including a clutch 3-pointer with 16 seconds left in the game to give the Santa Cruz Warriors a 98-92 lead.

The Santa Cruz Warriors led for most of the game - by as much as 15 points in the fourth quarter - but the Reno Bighorns made it close by cutting that lead to 1 with 1:36 in the fourth. The Santa Cruz Warriors went on an 8-3 run to seal the game.

The Warriors' stout defense was on display, holding the Bighorns to 39% shooting from the field and besting the Bighorns 53-34 on the glass, with 14 offensive rebounds.
