Ports Rout Giants, 13-2 Garcia homers for San Jose in defeat

STOCKTON, CA - The San Jose Giants allowed a season-high in runs scored Saturday night and suffered their largest margin of defeat this year in a 13-2 loss to the Stockton Ports at Banner Island Ballpark. Stockton scored in five out of the first six innings to build a commanding 13-0 lead before cruising to the victory. The Giants (13-17) have now dropped two out of the first three games in the series.

Aramis Garcia (1-for-4, HR, 2 RBI) smacked his team-leading sixth home run of the season in defeat for San Jose. Ryan Howard (1-for-4) also extended his hitting streak to 14 games.

2016 first round draft pick A.J. Puk fired five scoreless innings with just one hit allowed to pick-up the win for the Ports. Puk, who retired 15 out of the 17 batters he faced during his start, walked none and struck out nine.

Stockton jumped out early against Giants starter Matt Krook sending all nine of their hitters to plate in a four-run bottom of the first. A one-out walk to Eli White started the rally before Skye Bolt reached safely on a throwing error committed by Jonah Arenado at third base. A walk to Seth Brown then loaded the bases before Tyler Ramirez delivered an RBI single to make it 1-0. Mikey White was up next for the Ports and he hit a grounder to third that Arenado fielded, but then threw wildly home to an effort to force out Bolt. The second error of the inning allowed both Bolt and Brown to score for a 3-0 Stockton advantage. Trent Gilbert then singled home Ramirez to make it 4-0.

The Ports kept the pressure on with two more runs in both the second and third innings. In the bottom of the second, Branden Cogswell drew a leadoff walk before Eli White singled. A walk to Bolt followed to load the bases with none out. Krook came back to strikeout Brown, but Ramirez then laced a line drive off of Krook on the mound to score another run. David Owen was then summoned from the bullpen and a Mikey White fielder's choice grounder brought home Eli White for a 6-0 cushion.

In the bottom of the third, Chris Iriart led off with a towering home run to deep right center. Iolana Akau then singled, moved to third on an Eli White single and scored when Bolt grounded out to make it 8-0.

Meanwhile, Puk dominated the San Jose lineup during his stint on the mound. The Stockton left-hander retired the first 10 batters that he faced, including five via the strikeout. Finally with one out in the top of the fourth, Howard beat out a slow roller to third for an infield single - the Giants' first baserunner of the night. After Bryan Reynolds grounded out, Garcia struck out, but reached first safely on a passed ball. Puk though recovered and struck out Daniel Carbonell on three pitches to end the inning.

Puk finished his night with a 1-2-3 top of the fifth registering two more strikeouts before the Ports offense produced a four-run bottom of the inning. An Akau leadoff single followed by a walk to Cogswell put two runners on. Eli White then grounded into a fielder's choice for the first out before Bolt delivered a sacrifice fly plating Akau. Back-to-back singles from Brown and Ramirez then produced another run to make it 10-0 ending Owen's night. Yordy Cabrera was then brought into pitch, but he promptly allowed a two-run double to deep right center to Mikey White stretching the Stockton lead to 12-0.

The Ports scored their 13th and final run of the contest in the bottom of the sixth as Iriart drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second on an Akau groundout, moved to third when Cogswell singled and scored on Eli White's groundout.

San Jose's only two runs came in the top of the seventh when Reynolds led off with a single before Garcia stepped to the plate and launched a two-run home run to left center.

The Giants threatened in the eighth as Johneshwy Fargas and Jalen Miller produced back-to-back one-out singles, but Howard and Reynolds were both retired to end the inning. San Jose was then set down 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth to finish the game.

Krook (0-4) was saddled with the loss after yielding six runs (two earned) in 1 1/3 innings. The left-hander allowed four hits, walked four and struck out three.
