Alvaro Saborio took care of the scoring for the visitors with a pair of second half goals. The Costa Rican striker polished off his first in the 71st minute thanks to a through ball from Joao Plata. Saborio got behind the San Jose defense and then struck a shot on the run past goalkeeper Jon Busch.
Saborio doubled his haul in the 85th minute, this time receiving a pass from Kyle Beckerman before slotting his shot past Busch to cap the scoring.
The Earthquakes had their chances, including a Chris Wondolowski shot that found the crossbar in the 15th minute. The 2012 Budweiser Golden Boot winner led San Jose with seven shots during the match.
The Earthquakes return to action on Sunday, March 10 against the New York Red Bulls at Buck Shaw Stadium. Kickoff is 7 p.m. PT on ESPN2, 1590 KLIV and 1370 KZSF.

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES FRANK YALLOP
On the game:
"If you look at general play, I thought we played pretty well. We had enough chances in the first half to be up a couple of goals. That's the sport though. You have to punish the other team when you get chances and we didn't do that."
On the team's attack:
"I wasn't sure how we would play with the guys we had out, but overall, I thought we did enough to get something out of the game. We created a number of good chances and we moved the ball, especially in the first 60 minutes. It was a frustrating night, but there were some positives we can take out of it moving ahead to next week."
EARTHQUAKES DEFENDER JUSTIN MORROW
On loss:
"It's a difficult way to start the new season at home. The beauty of soccer is you don't have too much time to think about the negatives because we have to apply the positives of the match towards New York [Red Bulls] next week. I felt we had a strong first half. We defended well, we created many chances, just couldn't finish tonight."
On missing injured players:
"We missed the guys up top in [Steven] Lenhart and Alan [Gordon]. We also missed Steven Beitashour in the back. No question we are a better team with them, but we were able create chances in their place. Players are going to miss time due to injury throughout the season. If we can step up to fill their voids like we did tonight we are going to be fine."
EARTHQUAKES FORWARD CHRIS WONDOLOWSKI
On scoring chances:
"Honestly, I felt we had a chance to put this game away in the first half. We didn't capitalize on our chances, and I had trouble putting the ball on frame. I take fault for that as I had at least four chances. [Alvaro] Saborio had two great finishes for them, but this game could have swung our way in the first half."
On playing with Mike Fucito:
"Anybody watching the match could tell that we were a dangerous pair up top. We created a lot of opportunities when we worked together. The two of us had chances that we wish we had back, but the technique wasn't there tonight. Overall, I felt we didn't miss a beat with Mike up top and I'm excited to see how scary our attack will be once we are at full strength."
