San Diego Sockers Game Notes - San Diego at Atletico Baja

December 25, 2015 - Major Arena Soccer League (MASL)
San Diego Sockers News Release

Carlsbad, CA - The San Diego Sockers (5-4) will look to close out 2015 with a win when the club travels across the boarder to face Atletico Baja (4-5) in Tijuana, Mexico on Sunday.

As soon as the holiday ends, it will be back to business for the Sockers, who are coming off a thrilling 4-3 come-from-behind victory against the Ontario Fury.

Matt Clare's two-goal performance was the difference. The 27-year-old became the first Sockers' player this season to hit double-digits with 10 goals.

Also coming to the fore in the fourth quarter rally was Enrique "Qeeks" Tovar with a goal and an assist.

This match will also signify the midway point of the season for both clubs.

The Sockers will look to end the first half of the season with a 6-4 record. Three points south of the boarder would also set the stage for San Diego to pull even with Tacoma for second in the Pacific Division when the two teams meet in Washington on January 3rd.

Atletico Baja will look to reach its first ever midway point of a Major Arena Soccer League season at .500 and strengthen its hold on second place in the Southwest Division.

While the Sockers ran out 8-1 winners in the first meeting, they can expect to face a very different Atletico Baja side in Mexico. Los Gallos are 2-0 in front of their home fans with a 9-8 win over the Ontario Fury back on November 15 and a 12-6 thumping of the Turlock Express last Sunday.

The home side is led by teenage sensation Aldo Medina. The 19-year-old has 11 goals and five assists to lead Atletico Baja with 16 points.

The final Kick-off of 2015 is set for 7:05pm PT. The match can be seen on www.golivesportscast.com.

THE SOCKERS AGAINST MEXICAN OPPOSITION

Going back to the 2011-2012 season, the Sockers are 13-2 against Mexican opposition. This season, the Sockers are 2-1. San Diego opened the campaign with a 7-5 win over Soles de Sonora before suffering a 15-8 defeat to the same side in Hermosillo, Mexico. The Sockers rebounded with an 8-1 win over Atletico Baja earlier this month.

The Sockers did not face Mexican opposition last season, but went 5-1 in 2013-2014, including a 7-4 playoff win against the Mexico Toros. San Diego's only loss that season came at home to Monterrey, 6-5 in a shootout.

Since 2011-2012, the Sockers are 5-1 on Mexican turf.

After the series finale with Atletico Baja, San Diego will face Sonora two more times this season.
