San Diego Gulls Announce Roster Moves

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Gulls announced today that the American Hockey League (AHL) club has assigned right wing Austin Ortega and defenseman James Melindy to the Utah Grizzlies, San Diego's primary affiliate in the ECHL .

Ortega, 23 (4/12/92), scored 2-810 points with 12 PIM in 17 appearances with the San Diego this season. A native of Escondido, Calif., the 5-8, 174-pound forward has collected 6-915 points in 23 career AHL games with San Diego. Signed to a one-year contract for the 2017-18 AHL season on Mar. 20, 2017, Ortega scored 70-69139 points with 66 PIM and a +4 rating in 147 games at the University of Nebraska-Omaha (National Collegiate Hockey Conference) from 2013-17. He tied the NCAA record with 23 career game-winning goals during his four-year collegiate career with the Mavericks.

Melindy, 24 (12/11/93), went scoreless in eight games and 33 penalty minutes (PIM) with San Diego this season. The Goulds, Newfoundland native earned three assists (0-33) and 38 PIM in 16 games with the Grizzlies this season. In 60 career AHL games with San Diego (2017-present) and Portland (2012-15), the 6-3, 203-pound defenseman has registered 2-13 points with 100 PIM. Originally selected by the Arizona Coyotes in the third round (88th overall) of the 2012 NHL Draft, Melindy has recorded 11-4152 points and 459 PIM in 199 career ECHL contests.
