Mexican Goal-Scorer Returns to SAFC Forward Line

SAN ANTONIO, TX - San Antonio FC has re-signed forward Ever Guzman for the 2018 USL season pending league and federation clearance, the club announced today. Per club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed. Guzman remains in San Antonio after originally joining the club in August of last season.

Guzman appeared in nine total regular season matches (556 minutes) with SAFC, scoring four goals which were tied for third on the team last year despite the forward joining late in the season. The Mexican added an assist in 2017 while also scoring the game-winning goal in the Western Conference Quarterfinal Playoff matchup against the Tulsa Roughnecks.

"We are excited that Ever is coming back to San Antonio FC for a second season," said SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell. "He impressed the coaching staff with his performances towards the end of last season and scored some valuable goals down the stretch for us. We look forward to having a full preseason with Ever and incorporating him into the 2018 team."

Guzman originally joined SAFC from Liga MX in Mexico, where he has spent time with Monarcas Morelia since 2004. The striker most recently spent time playing for Correcaminos UAT in Ascenso MX where he scored 10 goals in 16 appearances from 2015-17. He made his professional debut for Morelia in 2004, and has gone on to make 79 appearances for them in the last 13 years. Guzman has also spent time with six different clubs within Liga MX and Ascenso MX, including Veracruz and two different spells with Venados FC.

The 29-year-old arrived in the professional limelight after he helped lead the U-17 Mexican National Team to a World Cup title in Peru in 2005. Playing alongside the likes of Carlos Vela and Giovanni Dos Santos, Guzman finished with the second-most goals in the tournament (four), and scored the third and final goal in the 3-0 win over Brazil in the final.

"I'm very happy to return to San Antonio FC" said Guzman. "I'm thankful towards the fans and the front office for making it happen and for the support they've shown me here. We had a great campaign last season and I'm looking forward to making 2018 even better."

In total, Guzman has appeared in eight matches for his country between the U-17 and U-23 levels, scoring five goals. Guzman has also claimed a club championship, winning the 2013 Apertura Copa MX Final with Morelia after the Monarcas won on penalty kicks following a 3-3 draw with Atlas in regular time.
