Sam Querrey Faces Novak Djokovic Today in Wimbledon Showdown

July 1, 2016 - World TeamTennis (WTT)
Washington Kastles News Release

Sam Querrey advanced to the third round at Wimbledon for the third time in his career this week. In the first round, Querrey played an epic five-set match against Lukas Rosol. Down two sets, Querrey staged a furious comeback eventually winning the fifth set 12-10 after breaking Rosol in the 21st game of the set.

The marathon match had little effect on Querrey in his second round match against tough Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci, as he used the power of 10 aces to muscle his way into the third round in straight sets 6-4, 6-3, 6-2.

By defeating Rosol and Bellucci, Querrey set up a showdown with World No. 1 Novak Djokovic, the winner of the past four grand slam titles. Querrey is 1-8 vs Djokovic in his career but he has never faced Djokovic on grass which is a surface that definitely plays well to Querrey's strengths. In his lone victory over Djokovic in 2012, Querrey aced Djokovic 18 times. With the slick grass surface playing well to his booming serve, Querrey will once again try to get the upper hand by forcing Djokovic to rely on holding his own serve.

Querrey's match is scheduled second on No. 1 Court and is expected to start at approximately 9:30 EST. The match can be seen live on ESPN and the WatchESPN app. You won't want to miss it!

In addition to Sam Querrey, Leander Peas will also be in action tomorrow as he and partner Marcin Matkowski face Yen-Hsun Lu and Janko Tipsarevic in the first round of Gentlemen's Doubles. The match is scheduled second on Court 7 and will be streamed live on WatchESPN at approximately 8 am EST.

It was a good day at Wimbledon for the rest of the Kastles, as the Bryan Brothers, Anastasia Rodionova, and Madison Brengle all advanced in their respective doubles draws.

The second-seeded Bryans defeated Inigo Huegun and Paolo Lorenzi in the first round, rallying from a set down to win the match 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. The Bryans are searching for their fourth Wimbledon and 17th Grand Slam Title.

Anastasia Rodionova, in her first match since winning the Aegon International Doubles Title, continued her strong form with partner Darija Jurak (San Diego Aviators), rallying from a 5-2 deficit in the third set to defeat ninth-seeded Yifan Xu and Saisai Zheng 7-6, 2-6, 7-5.

Madison Brengle, teaming up with partner Tatjana Maria, enjoyed an easy opening round match, dismissing the tough team of Daniela Hantuchova and Donna Vekic 6-1, 6-3. They will face American duo Abigail Spears and Raquel Atawo in the second round.

The Mixed Doubles Draw for Wimbledon was released on Thursday. In addition to the legendary pair of Martina Hingis and Leander Paes, Anastasia Rodionova and Madison Brengle are also competing in the draw with first-time partners. Rodionova is teaming up with Paes's Olympic doubles partner Rohan Bopanna and Brengle is teaming up with the always entertaining German Dustin Brown. Hingis/Paes are seeded 16th and Rodionova/Bopanna are seeded 13th, and, as seeds, received a bye into the second round. Brengle/Brown take on Oliver Marach (New York Empire) and Jelena Ostapenko in the first round tomorrow as the fourth match on Court 5.
