Saltdogs Rally Early to Even Series on Goldeyes

SALTDOGS RALLY EARLY TO EVEN SERIES ON GOLDEYES

Christian Ibarra and Joe Robbins drew back-to-back walks to open the bottom of the first inning. After Cesar Valera lined a single to right, Curt Smith drew a bases loaded walk to force home Ibarra with the game's first run. Randolph Oduber grounded into a force play at second base that scored Robbins to make it 2-0. After Nathaniel Maggio struck out, Brandon Jacobs lined a two-out, two-run double to centre field that stretched the Saltdogs' lead to 4-0. Brent Dean followed with an RBI double that plated Jacobs.

With two outs and no one on base in the bottom of the second, Valera singled through the left side and took second on a single to right by Smith. After Oduber was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Maggio walked to force in Valera with the Saltdogs' sixth run. Jacobs broke the game open with a grand slam home run to right centre.

Ibarra reached on an infield single with one out in the third. Two batters later, Valera singled to centre, and the Saltdogs took a 12-0 lead when Smith hit a two-out, two-run double to centre.

Saltdogs' starter Derek Gordon (1-0) earned the win, pitching seven shutout innings on four hits. Gordon walked one and struck out eight.

Lincoln tacked on its final run in the bottom of the eighth when Jacobs hit a two-out, RBI single to centre. Jacobs finished with seven RBI.

Zack Dodson pitched six and one-third innings in long relief. Evan Rutckyj and Kenny Mathews combined for one and two-thirds relief innings without allowing an earned run.

Mikey O'Brien (0-1) started for Winnipeg and took the loss, allowing five earned runs on three hits in one inning. O'Brien walked three and struck out one.

Game Three of the American Association Division Series is Saturday evening. First pitch from Shaw Park is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. Charle Rosario (11-5, 3.06) faces left-hander Bennett Parry (3-2, 1.93). Game Four is scheduled for Sunday at 4:05 p.m. at Shaw Park. The "if necessary" Game Five will also be played at Shaw Park on Monday at 7:05 p.m.
