Salt Lake rebounds from shutout to win nightcap

Portland Beavers News Release

PORTLAND, Ore. - Shawn Estes worked 6 1/3 scoreless innings in a major league rehab start and Matt Antonelli hit an RBI triple and scored a run as the Portland Beavers beat the Salt Lake Bees 2-0 in the first game of a doubleheader before falling 6-3 in the nightcap in front of 5,028 Tuesday night at PGE Park.

With their magic number down to a game, the Bees (80-58) were awaiting the final result of the second game of a doubleheader between Sacramento and Tacoma to know if they clinched the Pacific Conference North Division.

The teams combined for just three hits over the first 4 ½ innings in the first game, but Portland (69-69) got an infield single from Vincent Sinisi to start the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Antonelli tripled him home and came in to score one batter later when Brett Dowdy poked a single into center.

With Estes (5-2) restricted by a predetermined pitch count in his second rehab appearance with the Beavers, Edwin Moreno recorded the final two outs of the seven-inning game for his 18th save. Estes, who struck out two and allowed three hits, is making his way back from a thumb fracture that landed him on the San Diego Padres' 15-day disabled list May 31.

In the nightcap, Bobby Wilson clubbed his fourth home run and Kendry Morales drove in two runs to lead the charge. And it wouldn't take long for Salt Lake to drum up some offense after getting blanked earlier.

The Bees scored a pair of runs in the first and got a solo home run from Wilson in the second on their way to a 3-0 lead.

Will Venable doubled home a run and scored on J.D. Closser's single to right to cut the margin to a run in the bottom of the second, but back-to-back RBI doubles from Freddy Sandoval and Morales and a run-scoring single from Brandon Wood in the third helped Salt Lake increase its lead to 6-2.

Brian Myrow later hit his 11th home run for the Beavers.

Justin Germano (2-8) gave up six runs (5 earned) over six innings in the nightcap to suffer his sixth straight losing decision.

The game two win went to Matt Wilhite (7-0), who tossed 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Darren O'Day closed out the game for his seventh save.

With two home games remaining in the 2008 home season, the Beavers entertain the Bees again Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. Portland concludes its home slate Thursday night.
