August 22, 2007 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
The Salt Lake Bees (68-63) took game one of a five-game series, 9-8, in a key series against the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (65-67) on Wednesday night in front of 2,850 fans at Security Service Field. The Bees and the Sky Sox are in first and second place respectively in the Pacific Coast League Pacific Northern Division and are battling for one playoff spot. The Sky Sox fell to 3.5 games back with the loss.
Tim Harikkala ran into trouble in the first inning after getting two quick outs against the Bees. A walk by Mike Eylward and a double by Kendry Morales put men on second and third for Terry Evans. Evans singled up the middle and looked to drive in both Eylward and Morales. On an appeal to third Morales was ruled out for missing the base so Salt Lake went up only 1-0.
The Sox answered the next inning with Joe Koshansky's two-run blast to take the lead 2-1.
Tommy Murphy added a solo shot for Salt Lake to make it 3-2 in the third.
In the fourth Greg Porter tied the game with an RBI single to score Morales and Bobby Wilson put the Bees ahead 4-3 with an RBI single.
A wild pitch by Salt Lake starter Steven Shell scored Doug Bernier to tie the game at 4-4 in the fifth. Jolbert Cabrera hit his second double of the game and fifth in two games to put the Sky Sox in front 6-4 to close out the fifth.
The Bees stormed back in the sixth with back-to-back doubles by Morales and Evans to cut the lead to 6-5 and bounce Harikkala from the game. Matt Brown added a deep two-run blast off Ramon Ramirez to make it 7-6 Bees.
Catcher Alvin Colina tied the game for the Sox with a double off the wall with two outs in the sixth. Omar Quintanilla followed Colina with a broken bat single up the middle to go ahead 8-7.
With two outs in the ninth inning Eylward lined the third consecutive single of the inning to center for the Bees to tie the game 8-8 off Sky Sox closer Ryan Speier. A past ball by Colina scored Tommy Murphy to give Salt Lake the lead for good at 9-8.
Jason Bulger (5-2) pitched 2.0 innings to get the win for the Bees and Ryan Speier (1-3) took the loss for the Sky Sox.
Left-hander Dan Serafini (0-1) gets the start for the Sox tomorrow night and right-hander Henry Bonilla (11-7) goes for the Bees. Game time is 7:05 MT.
