Salem Red Sox News Release
Frederick, MD (June 7, 2009)- Zach Britton lowered his ERA to 2.11 with six dominant innings as the Keys knocked off the Red Sox 6-1 on Sunday afternoon at Harry Grove Stadium. Following Salem's sweep of the Friday doubleheader, Frederick garnered the final pair in the series to split the four-game set with the Sox.
Though Britton has not received much run support in 2009, he was the beneficiary of four runs in the first two innings and another tally in the fourth. Frederick scored a pair in the first off Salem starter Bryan Price, with Pedro Florimon driving in Matt Angle for the first run before an out was recorded after Angle singled and stole second. Brandon Waring popped up, but Caleb Joseph doubled in the gap to make it 2-0.
The Keys received more of the same in the second as the home team scored twice more against Price, who would only last four innings. Frederick loaded the bases, setting up Waring's two run single that made it 4-0. Price pitched a 1-2-3 third, but was removed after three more singles yielded another run in the fourth. All in all, Price surrendered nine hits and five runs, striking out five Keys while absorbing his second defeat of the season.
Britton shined for Frederick, utilizing a devastating sinker that induced 12 ground-balls that led to 13 outs in six innings. Britton allowed just two hits, and the Red Sox' lone run came thanks to a pair of Tyler Henson errors in the sixth. The Keys' All-Star southpaw improved to 3-2 and Frederick's Jake Stevens and Brian Parker combined for three scoreless innings to close it out.
Salem only tallied four hits, one each for Kris Negron, Zach Borowiak, Ty Weeden, and Jered Stanley. Salem also received four walks, but the Sox finished 0-10 with runners in scoring position. Even though Josh Papelbon kept the Keys at bay with just a single unearned tally in four frames out of the Pen, Salem could never put a rally together and lost for the second straight day.
The road trip continues for Salem on Monday evening with a 7:05 contest against the Wilmington Blue Rocks. Kyle Weiland is expected to start for the Sox, while the Rocks are likely to counter with Mario Santiago.
