Saints Trounced by Wingnuts 18-6

June 16, 2013 - American Association (AA) - St. Paul Saints News Release

WICHITA, KS (June 16, 2013) - The St. Paul Saints would just assume forget everything about Sunday afternoon's game against the Wichita Wingnuts. The lone bright spot is they fell just short of the most hits and earned runs given up in a game in franchise history. That was a small consolation as they lost 18-6 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.

The Wingnuts scored at least a run in every inning with the exception of the sixth and every player who got into the game collected a hit. In all the Wingnuts pounded out 22 hits, one shy of the most allowed by the Saints in franchise history while 17 of the 18 runs were earned, also one shy of the franchise record. The last time the Saints gave up more than 18 runs was August 10, 2010 at home against Sioux City when they gave up 19.

The Saints and Wingnuts actually went toe-to-toe in the early innings with Brad Boyer hitting a two-run homer in the first to give the Saints a 2-0 lead, but as the Wingnuts did all series they immediately answered back with two in the bottom of the inning.

In the fourth with the Saints trailing 5-3 Jose Hernandez would score on a wild pitch and Joey Becker added a two-run single to give the Saints a 6-5 lead. It was the last lead they would have and they would collect just one more hit the rest of the game.

The Wingnuts, on the other hand, couldn't be stopped. They regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by John Rodriguez and an RBI double from CJ Ziegler. Saints starter Luke Anderson lasted just 4.0 innings allowing seven runs (six earned) while walking four and striking out one. The Saints walked a total of eight Wingnuts hitters.

The lone zero put up on the board by Saints pitchers was done by Billy Soule who walked Rodriguez to lead off the sixth, but got a fly out, foul out and a fielder's choice ground out to end the inning. Soule, however, didn't have much more success going 2.1 innings allowing six runs on six hits while walking two and striking out one.

The largest inning for the Wingnuts came in a six run seventh, the third time in the four game series they scored at least six runs in an inning. The Saints turned to position player Donald Blunt to throw the eighth inning and he gave up three runs on five hits.

The Saints allowed 38 runs in 32 innings in the series.

The Saints head home for a three game series against the Winnipeg Goldeyes beginning on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send LHP Cole Nelson (2-1, 1.78) to the mound against Goldeyes LHP Mark Hardy (3-1, 2.39). The Saints will hold a Toilet Paper Drive presented by Innovative Office Solution. The toilet paper will be donated to Second Harvest Heartland. The game can be heard on Club 1220 AM or in the ballpark on 87.9 FM.
