Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release

Valiant third period effort falls just short as Jacks win seventh straight

DUBUQUE, Iowa - Down 3-0 heading into the third period, the Dubuque Fighting Saints staged an effort to climb back within a single goal, but it fell just short. The Muskegon Lumberjacks held on to complete a 3-2 victory over the Saints, marking the team's seventh consecutive win- a club record. The two teams are now tied in the standings heading into tomorrow's crucial contest.

Chayse Primeau began the comeback trail just 14 seconds into the third period, as a Muskegon giveaway led to an opportunity in front of the goal. Primeau chipped the puck through Keegan Karki to notch his eighth goal of the season, and cut Muskegon's lead to two.

Following tremendous defensive play by the Lumberjacks, one miscue led to trouble. Jan Kern forced a turnover in the high slot and fed a pass to leading scorer Alex Steeves. His pass through the netmouth deflected off of a skate and into the goal to cut the lead to one. A late power play proved eventful, but not enough to tie the game and force overtime.

Muskegon began the scoring at the 13:01 mark of the first period, as Anthony Del Gaizo converted on a rebound off the shot from brother Marc on the power play. Wyatt Bongiovanni also cashed in on the scoring before leaving the game with an injury.

Monte Graham and Anthony Del Gaizo added tallies in the second period, separated by two minutes and 31 seconds. The Jacks led by three heading into the third period, where the Saints attempted to stage the unlikely comeback.

Cole Weaver made 18 saves in the losing effort. Karki made 19 in the victory.

The Saints are back in action against the Muskegon Lumberjacks tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. It's Markers for St. Mark Night, sponsored by Crawford Company North! All school supply donations will benefit St. Mark Youth Enrichment in Dubuque. St. Mark is asking for markers, dry erase markers, crayons and colored pencils.
