Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - When the offense started, it never seemed to want to stop. The Dubuque Fighting Saints fired 45 shots on goal, including 24 in the second period alone, to power past the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders 10-3 at The Stable on Friday night.

Colin Theisen and R.J. Murphy tallied a pair of goals, and Dallas Gerads bagged four assists in the offensive explosion that mostly featured quick strikes on offense. The longest wait between goals in the game was a shade under 13 minutes. The shortest wait was 11 seconds. Seven players tallied multi-point games.

With Cedar Rapids leading 3-2 after one frame, following three quick goals from Johnny DeRoche, Marc McLaughlin and Will Garin, the Fighting Saints rallied quickly in the early stages of the second period. Murphy bashed a netmouth feed from Gerads into the open twine 31 seconds in to tie, and David Brumm followed up the act with a goal 12 seconds later to put Dubuque in front 4-3.

They would not need another goal, but they got six more. Two of them came fast and furious, just 11 seconds apart. Cole Guttman deposited a give-and-go rush with Erik Ullman to make it 5-3, and Jacob Schmidt-Svejstrup ended CR netminder Zack LaRoque's night with a goal of his own from the high slot to put the Saints up decisively, 6-3.

Matthew Ladd fared no better in relief. Jack Jeffers concluded a five-score frame for the Fighting Saints with a goal of his own, assisted by Quinn Preston, who had a three-point night of his own, and Patrick Kudla, who added another pair of assists following his apple the night prior.

Theisen, John Wojciechowsi and Murphy all tallied in the third period to put the game away and to hit the double-digit mark. Theisen scored his second of the night 27 seconds into the third.

Not to be outdone in his first start of the preseason, Jaxon Castor stopped 28 shots fired his way in the win, his second of the preseason.

The Saints got the scoring started at the 8:51 mark of the first period with Theisen, assist Gerads, and 1:06 later with Preston, getting help from Veli-Matti Tiuraniemi and Jeffers. CR's three goals in response came in an elapsed time of two minutes and 20 seconds.

Dubuque's power play went 1-for-4, with Theisen's marker being the only one scored on the man advantage. The Fighting Saints failed to capitalize on a full two-minute 5-on-3 power play opportunity midway through the first period, but it did not change the outcome.

The Fighting Saints will host the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders on Saturday, September 10 at Our House. Join the home ice advantage and catch the last game at home until September 30 by calling the box office at 563.583.6880, or by going to DubuqueFightingSaints.com.
