Saints Hang On For 7-6, 6 Inning Rain Shortened Win In Game Two Of Doubleheader

Perhaps an assist to Mother Nature for the St. Paul Saints. In game two of the doubleheader at Shaw Park they hung on to win a six inning rain shortened game 7-6 over the Winnipeg Goldeyes. The win improved the Saints to 55-28 and increased their lead in the North Division to 5.5 games.

With the Saints leading 7-2 in the bottom of the sixth Robert Coe gave up a leadoff single to Reggie Abercrombie and then walked Josh Romanski. Ryan Rodebaugh came on in relief and gave up a leadoff single to David Rohm to make it 7-3. Wes Darvill singled to load the bases, but Rodebaugh settled down. He struck out Casio Grider and got Tanner Murphy to pop out. With the rain falling and the wind howling to right, Maikol Gonzalez hit a fly ball to right that carried over the head of Breland Almadova for a bases clearing triple making it a one run game. The umpires then pulled the teams off the field. After an 1:07 rain delay the game resumed and Rodebaugh got Adam Heisler to foul out to left to end the inning.

With the top of the seventh under way and two outs the heavy rain returned, the tarp was unable to get on the field and the umpires ruled the game over with the Saints winning the official game.

The Saints jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first when Alonzo Harris singled and stole second. With two outs Edwin Carl walked three, including Tony Caldwell with the bases loaded to give the Saints a 1-0 lead. Bryson Myles followed with a two-run double to put the Saints up three.

With the Saints up 4-2 in the fourth Myles led off with a walk and moved to second on a single by Aaron Gretz. A sacrifice by Almadova moved the runners up. Harris made it 5-2 with an RBI single and a sacrifice fly by Tanner Vavra made it 6-2.

The Saints got a run in the sixth, that turned out to be the game winner, when Almadova walked, stole second and scored on a two-out single by Tony Thomas.

The same two teams meet in the finale of the four game series on Thursday morning at 11:00 a.m. The Saints send RHP Dan Johnson (4-2, 3.41) to the mound against RHP Mikey O'Brien (9-4, 4.64). The game can be heard on Club 1220 KLBB.
