Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release

The Dubuque Fighting Saints dropped the second contest of their home and home against the Green Bay Gamblers, 3-2 in a shootout on Saturday night. Dubuque battled back from a 2-0 deficit in the third period to send the game to overtime. After a scoreless five minutes the Gamblers secured the only goal of the shootout to skate away with the win. Here are your game notes.

-Unlike last night, the Saints looked strong in the first period. They outshot the Gamblers 8-7 and despite being down 1-0 after one, the Saints controlled good chunks of the period. Dubuque wasn't as good in period number two but overall the team looked better than last night.

-Period three was all Dubuque. Even before the goal from Sam Martel the tone was set by a two minute penalty kill to begin the period. After that Dubuque continued to motor and controlled zone time for large portions of the period.

-Sam Martel, goal scorer. The Dubuque defenseman scored his second of the preseason on a play that was very similar to the goal he scored during Friday night's contest. Martel got a good bounce in the slot and hammered one by goaltender Evan Fear for the first of the night.

-Patrick Smyth was all over the ice for the Saints. He scored a goal, was a big part of the first goal and made his presence known all night. Smyth used his body to his advantage to shield the puck, work over defenders and create space for himself to make plays.

-Aaron Randazzo continued his stellar preseason. The netminder was calm for the Fighting Saints and made a few fantastic saves. The two goals that went in were quality plays by the Gamblers. Outside of a perfect shot and a perfect pass, Randazzo himself was perfect in this one.

-Despite the result, this was a very strong game for the Fighting Saints. Dubuque will see Green Bay again to begin the regular season during the USHL Fall Classic next Saturday. Dubuque will have to cut their 30 man roster down to 23 in the next 24 hours and then the regular season will begin.
