Sacramento Republic FC News Release
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sacramento Republic FC will host the San Jose Earthquakes (MLS) in a friendly match on Saturday, February 20, 2016 at Bonney Field. The match will be the second of two 2016 preseason friendlies versus MLS clubs for the 2014 USL Champions. Kickoff time to be announced.
"It's always good to have high quality opposition in the preseason to see where we are at with our preparations for the upcoming season," said Sacramento Republic FC Head Coach and Technical Director Paul Buckle. "I'm happy to welcome Dominic and his team to Bonney Field. I got to know Dominic well last year through the loan process and I look forward to continuing that relationship this season with the affiliation agreement between the two clubs. This match should be a good game to prepare both clubs for the upcoming season."
The match will be the fifth matchup between the two clubs since Sacramento Republic FC's inaugural season. The clubs have met once in an exhibition match and then again in a U.S. Open Cup match in each of the last two seasons. The last match between the two clubs, a fourth round matchup in the 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, was decided by penalties when neither team could come away with a victory after 120 minutes of play. The Earthquakes advanced in the tournament, winning 6-5 in the shootout. San Jose has won all of the previous meetings between the two clubs.
"We are delighted to be playing our affiliate once again," said San Jose Earthquakes President Dave Kaval. "This is becoming an annual event and one which players and fans of both sides relish. We look forward to the latest installment of our friendly rivalry."
Multiple Quakes players have been loaned to Sacramento Republic FC throughout the last two seasons as a part of the affiliation between the two clubs. San Jose forwards Adam Jahn and Mark Sherrod and midfielders Tommy Thompson and JJ Koval, are among the players who played with Sacramento Republic FC as a part of the affiliation. Jahn, a Davis, Calif. native, appeared in 22 matches for Sacramento Republic FC in their inaugural season, scoring seven goals in 1,493 minutes. Granite Bay, Calif. native Tommy Thompson has appeared in 11 matches for Sacramento Republic FC over the last two seasons, scoring a goal and recording two assists. Sherrod and Koval have appeared in a combined 10 matches, scoring a combined three goals.
The match will be the second friendly match against an MLS opponent for Sacramento Republic FC during their 2016 preseason. Sacramento Republic FC will host the Colorado Rapids on February 13, 2016. Sacramento Republic FC will begin their 2016 training camp on February 1, 2016.
