Sacramento Capitals Add Coco Vandeweghe to Roster for WTT Finals Weekend
September 5, 2012 - World TeamTennis (WTT) News Release
CHARLESTON, S.C. (September 5, 2012) -- One of America's top young tennis talents, Coco Vandeweghe, will join her Sacramento Capitals teammates for the WTT Finals Weekend presented by GEICO, Sept. 14-16, at the Family Circle Tennis Center in Charleston, S.C.
Vandeweghe, who played four matches for the Capitals during the final week of the regular season, was added to the Finals roster today. In addition to her WTT success, Vandeweghe is having a strong year on the WTA Tour and is currently ranked No. 75 in singles. The 20-year-old reached her highest singles ranking of No. 69 this July after advancing to the finals of the Stanford event, where she lost to Serena Williams. This is Vandeweghe's fourth WTT season.
Other notable names scheduled to play in the WTT Finals Weekend presented by GEICO include three former World No. 1s in both singles and doubles - Venus Williams with the Washington Kastles; and Martina Hingis and John McEnroe with the New York Sportimes.
Action starts on Friday, Sept. 14, when the Sacramento Capitals and the Orange County Breakers play at 6:30 p.m. EDT for the Western Conference Championship. Joining Vandeweghe on the Capitals roster is world No. 34 Kevin Anderson, Mark Knowles, Yasmin Schnack and Asia Muhammad. WTT Rookie of the Year John-Patrick Smith heads the Breakers lineup along with two former Grand Slam mixed doubles champions, Anna-Lena Groenefeld and Travis Parrott, and former collegiate standout Jana Juricova.
Hingis and Williams are expected to face off in women's singles during the Eastern Conference Championship showdown at 6:30 p.m. EDT on Sept. 15 between long-time rivals, the New York Sportimes and the undefeated Washington Kastles. The Kastles are riding a 30-match win streak that started with their unbeaten 2011 season, giving them the second longest U.S. pro sports team win streak in history.
The roster for the Kastles includes Williams, Leander Paes, 2012 WTT Male MVP Bobby Reynolds, Anastasia Rodionova and Arina Rodionova. Hingis will be joined by Hall of Famer John McEnroe, Jesse Witten, Robert Kendrick, and Ashley Harkleroad for the Sportimes.
The Conference Champions advance to the WTT Finals on Sunday, Sept. 16, at 3:30 p.m. EDT with the winner taking home the King Trophy, named after WTT co-founder Billie Jean King.
