Saccomanno, Johnson help Express dust Beavers

ROUND ROCK, Texas - Mark Saccomanno had three hits and four RBIs and Chris Johnson hit a two-run homer as part of a seven-run eighth inning as the Round Rock Express tallied 17 hits on their way to a 15-3 win over the Portland Beavers at The Dell Diamond Monday night.

Tommy Manzella added three hits and two RBIs while Brian Bogusevic had two hits and scored three times as every starting position player in the Express (51-66) lineup had a hit and scored a run. Reggie Abercrombie added his seventh homer of the year.

Matt Antonelli collected three hits and Danny Putnam hit a pinch-hit, two-run double for the Beavers (50-67), who have lost three straight after winning four of five.

Express starter Felipe Paulino (2-0) worked five innings, scattering four hits and three walks while allowing just one run.

Josh Geer (2-2) gave up eight runs (7 earned) on 10 hits over five innings to take his first loss since being optioned from the Padres on Aug. 2.

The Express used four straight first-inning singles to plate three runs off Geer. Bogusevic and Saccomanno started the rally before Manzella hit an infield RBI single and Johnson had the first of his two, two-run hits, a two-out single to center.

Abercrombie's solo shot in the second made it 4-0 before the Beavers got one back on Russ Adams' RBI double in the fourth.

Round Rock again used a flurry of singles to put runs on the board in the fifth. The first five batters of the fifth inning singled off Geer, resulting in four runs in the inning. Chad Spann started with a pinch-single and Abercrombie and Jason Smith loaded the bases with two more hits. Bogusevic blistered a ball that the second baseman Antonelli knocked down but could do nothing with to score Spann. Saccomanno;s two-run single was lost in the lights by right fielder Mike Baxter, scoring Abercrombie and Smith.

Portland put together a two-run, two-out rally in the sixth, as Putnam followed singles by Russ Adams and Antonelli with a two-run double to left.

Up 8-3, the Express added seven insurance runs in the eighth inning, highlighted by Johnson's two-run homer and Saccomanno's two-run double. It marked the third time on the Beavers' road trip that they had given up at least five runs in the eighth inning.

The Beavers and Express meet again in the third game of their four-game series Monday night at 5:05 p.m. (Pacific).

NOTES: Outfielder Chad Huffman today was named PCL Hitter of the Week for the week inclusive of Aug. 3-9, after hitting .478 (11-for-23) with three homers, nine RBIs and six runs scored ... right-hander Carlos Guevara was transferred to Portland from Class AA San Antonio earlier in the day and pitched a scoreless seventh inning ... Guevara had not pitched for the Beavers since Aug. 3, 2008, against Round Rock at PGE Park ... Round Rock had separate strings of three, four, four and five straight hits throughout the game.
