Iowa Cubs News Release

Des Moines, IA - The Chicago Cubs announced a series of trades and roster moves today that impact the Iowa Cubs roster. The Cubs placed former I-Cub and Cedar Rapids native, Ryan Sweeney, on the 60-day disabled list and recalled LHP Chris Rusin and OF Dave Sappelt from Iowa. The Cubs also traded RHP Scott Feldman and C Steve Clevenger to the Baltimore Orioles for RH starter Jake Arrieta, RH reliever Pedro Strop, and two international league signing bonus slots. Arrieta has been assigned to Iowa and will report to the team later in the week.

Rusin, who was named to the PCL All-Star Team earlier today, is 7-7 with a 3.27 ERA in 17 games (16 starts) with Iowa this season. In 110.0 innings, he has allowed 42 runs (40 earned) on 99 hits, walked 22, and struck out 63. He leads the league in innings pitched and a 1.10 WHIP (walks plus hits per innings pitched). He is tied for fourth in the league in opponents' batting average (.241) and ranks fifth in ERA. Among starting pitchers, Rusin is second in the league in fewest walks per nine innings ratio (1.89) and fewest base runners per nine innings (10.37).

Sappelt is batting .269 (50-for-186) with 12 doubles, three triples, two home runs and 34 RBI with Iowa since getting optioned from Chicago on May 7. He led the Cubs and tied for ninth in the league with 21 RBI in June. Sappelt hit .178 (8-for-45) in 20 games with Chicago to begin the season.

Sweeney has a fractured rib after crashing into the wall at Safeco Field in Seattle last Saturday night. He was batting .295 (33-for-112) with 10 doubles, four homers, and 15 RBI in 44 games since getting called up by Chicago on May 6. He batted .337 (28-for-83) with six homers and 16 RBI in 23 games with Iowa to begin the year.

Clevenger batted .327 (17-for-52) with five doubles, three home runs, and 11 RBI in 15 games with Iowa on a major league rehab assignment from June 3-21. He was on Chicago's 60-day disabled list with a strained oblique. He was activated from the DL and optioned to Iowa on June 28. He was 1-for-8 in eight games with Chicago before sustaining the injury. The trade to the Orioles is a homecoming for Clevenger who was born, and still makes his off-season home, in Baltimore.

Arrieta began the season with Baltimore and was 1-2 with a 7.23 ERA (19ER/23.2IP) in five starts over three stints in the big leagues this season. With triple-A Norfolk, he went 5-3 with a 4.41 ERA (24ER/49.0IP) in nine appearances (eight starts). The Orioles selected Arrieta in the fifth round of the 2007 draft out of Texas Christian University. He made his big league debut in 2010 and is 20-25 with a 5.46 ERA (217ER/358.0IP) in 69 big league appearances, including 63 starts.

The Cubs also traded former I-Cub Carlos Marmol and one of the international signing bonus slots they acquired from the Orioles to the Los Angeles Dodgers for RH reliever Matt Guerrier and dealt double-A infielder, Ronald Torreyes to the Houston Astros for two international signing bonus slots.
