Ruby Spectacular in Tough 2-1 Shootout Loss to Jackals

January 18, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Brampton Beast News Release

ELMIRA, NEW YORK - Brampton Beast starting goaltender Jordan Ruby was sensational between the pipes for the second straight night and kicked out 41 saves and helped his team kill three different 5-on-3's, but the Elmira Jackals scored late in the third period to tie the game and later ended it in a shootout, stealing a 2-1 shootout victory from the Beast at First Arena in Elmira on Monday afternoon.

Tim Bozon got things started for the Beast early in the first period as he got his stick on a bouncing shot from Steven Kaunisto to deflect the puck behind Jackals starter C.J. Motte for an early lead just 2:13 into the hockey game.

Before the end of the first period, the Beast found themselves down several players as Luke Pither took a hit up high and left the game. Mike Vernace was nabbed for a ten-minute misconduct and was unavailable until the second period and Chris Auger took a puck up high and left the game, but would return.

Jordan Ruby helped his team kill a full two-minute five-on-three plus an additional two-minute minor as the Beast held a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes, despite being outshot 11-7.

The Jackals threw everything they had at Ruby in the second period, but the goaltender made 19 saves in the second period alone, several of the highlight variety, to maintain the 1-0 score after the second period.

Elmira outshot Brampton again in the third period, this time by a count of 9-8 but Ruby continued to shine to maintain the lead until the 17:15 point of the final frame. Jackals forward Mike Seidel pounced on a puck that came loose from the corner and one-timed a quick shot from inside the circle that beat Ruby between his glove and his outstretched pad to tie the game with less than three minutes to go.

The Jackals outshot the Beast 3-0 in overtime, but again Ruby continued his stellar play to force the game into a shootout.

Scott Howes scored on a beautiful deke in the shootout but Colin Jacobs and Tyler Gjurich both beat Ruby on the glove hand to steal the victory.

Motte made 18 saves to pick up the win, while Ruby finished the game with 41 saves, the most saves made by a Beast goaltender in a single game all season.

Notes: The Beast finished the game 0-for-2 on the power play but were a perfect 7-for-7 on the penalty kill. With the goal, Tim Bozon extended his point streak to four games.

The Beast will take a few days off before heading to Reading to take on the Royals on Friday and Saturday, January 22 and 23. The Beast return home on January 31 as they host the Wheeling Nailers. Single game tickets are now available, starting at $16.25.
