RubberDucks 6 Thunder 5

Akron RubberDucks News Release

Summary

Akron's Jeremy Lucas and Joe Sever slugged two-run doubles during a six-run first inning Wednesday night, and four RubberDucks pitchers made the lead stand up in a 6-5 victory over the Trenton Thunder at ARM & HAMMER Park.

Turning Point

The RubberDucks (62-60) sent 10 batters to the plate and scored six times in the first inning against lefty Dan Camarena (8-5). Lucas narrowly missed a grand slam, settling with a bases-loaded, ground-rule double with one out. Eric Haase followed with an RBI single to center to make it 3-0. Sever ripped a double down the third-base line to chase home two more runs. After Eric Stamets reached on an error that moved Sever to third base, Camarena balked, send Sever home and making it 6-0.

Winging It

D.J. Brown (7-6) allowed seven hits and three runs over 5.2 innings to earn the win. Brown walked one and struck out three. Cameron Hill relieved Brown in the sixth with a man on and gave up an RBI double to make it 6-3. Trenton's Dustin Fowler launched a solo homer off Hill in the seventh to make it 6-4. Cole Susler came out of the bullpen in the eighth and tossed a perfect inning, but in the ninth gave up a lead-off double to Jose Rosario and a RBI single to Sebastian Valle to make it a one-run game, 6-5. Lefty Colt Hynes took over, however, and retired the next three batters to preserve the win and earn his first save.

Duck Tales

Lucas finished 2-4, with two doubles. Jordan Smith was also 2-4, which extended his hitting streak to five games. For the second straight night, Greg Allen led off the game with a hit. He singled and scored on the Lucas double in the first inning.
